The U.S. Mint is rolling out a new collectible medal celebrating the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the marquee IndyCar event set to take over the streets of Washington, D.C., this weekend.

“The United States Mint captured this singular convergence of American history and American speed in a single, strikable object — an official medal that turns this historic two-day spectacle into a lifetime keepsake,” the Mint said.

The medal is part of the U.S. Mint’s broader celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As part of the yearlong celebration, the Mint is introducing one-year-only changes to familiar American coinage, including the circulating dime, quarter, and half dollar. The Mint is also releasing special numismatic coins and medals throughout 2026 featuring unique designs and enhancements.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix begins Saturday, Aug. 22, with a 1.7-mile, seven-turn street circuit winding through the nation’s capital. IndyCars will race at speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour past some of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks, including the Washington Monument, U.S. Capitol, and Smithsonian museums.

Sunday’s IndyCar Series race will consist of 147 laps, creating a 250-mile race in honor of America 250. President Donald Trump is expected to take an honorary lap around the circuit in the presidential limousine ahead of Sunday’s race.

“President Trump is ensuring America gets the spectacular birthday it deserves as we celebrate our 250th anniversary,” White House spokesman Davis Ingle said in a statement. “The historic IndyCar race set to take place in our Nation’s Capital will be one of the greatest and most iconic races in history. The President will leave his imprint on this historic race in a way that only he can.”
