Summary
- A new ad challenges the argument that requiring ID to vote is racist.
- Current polling shows national support for voter ID, including 76% of Black Americans and 82% of Latinos.
- However, latest polling shows only 40% of California voters support Proposition 39.
A new AI-generated California voter ID ad depicts Black and Hispanic Americans pushing back against the common Democrat argument that requiring identification to vote is racist.
In the ad, a focus group leader reads a statement opposing voter ID requirements on the grounds that they discriminate against minorities: “Voter ID is racist because African Americans and Hispanics have a hard time getting an ID.”
But focus-group participants push back, with one asking, “You don’t think I can get an ID?” Another responds, “I’m Hispanic, I have an ID.”
The ad, released by Californians for Voter ID, urges Californians to vote “yes” on Proposition 39 on Election Day.
“Eric Swalwell, Rob Bonta, and other professional politicians want you to believe that Voter ID is racist. It isn’t,” the group posted on X. “In fact, Prop 39 would require the state to provide free IDs to anyone who needs them, making it easier for all California citizens to have identification. Swalwell, Bonta and the other anti-Voter ID crowd just won’t tell the truth.”
Proposition 39 would require voters to present a government-issued ID for in-person voting or provide the last four digits of a government-issued ID designated during voter registration for mail-in voting.
The argument that voter ID is racist is a talking point often used by left-wing opponents, but polling suggests that requiring identification to vote is supported across racial groups.
In February, CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten highlighted a poll showing that 76% of Black Americans and 82% of Latinos support requiring photo identification to vote, along with 85% of white Americans.
“The bottom line is this: Voter ID is not controversial in this country,” Enten said.
Despite this, a poll released Tuesday by the Public Policy Institute of California shows that only 40% of California voters support Proposition 39.
