Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has addressed the claims made by multiple outlets that the conditions onboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln are awful.

The Navy Times reported the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln which is on a record long deployment, has reportedly seen its conditions onboard deteriorate.

The outlet also noted that several sailors have attempted to jump overboard due to being mentally fatigued from their long deployment.

On Thursday, Hegseth addressed the reports and shared that the claims are being framed in a wrongful manner.

Mediaite provided Hegseth’s full response to the reports:

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth denied reports of deplorable conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln, telling reporters Thursday the claims of rotten food, poor conditions and sailors jumping overboard have been “completely misrepresented.”

In a clip shared by NewsMax foreign affairs correspondent Alex Salvi, Hegseth says he wants to get America’s sailors relief from their long deployment as much as anyone.

“Listen, we make sure that every ship, every crew, every captain has everything we can provide them at every single moment,” he said.

The Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has been in the North Arabian Sea, supporting the United States operations against Iran, a conflict which began Feb. 28 and has shown no signs of stopping.

The vessel deployed from its home base in San Diego on Nov. 21 and was due to return in May, but the deployment was extended.

“Some deployments are longer than others, and I have more respect and gratitude for those sailors than anybody,” Hegseth said. “What they do in those high seas and those austere conditions with fewer port calls — it’s incredible. Americans don’t understand what it’s like to do that.

“So as someone who’s not been on a ship like that but been on long deployments, I feel it. I want them home as soon as everybody else, too. I want folks rotated as quickly as possible. I want the best for them. My commanders know that, our service secretaries know that. The president expects that,” he added.

“And so to that crew and to all those crews, we’re going to do everything we can for you,” Hegseth said. “And we are so grateful for their dedication of that crew and others they’ve held the line for the country and they’ve done a fantastic job.”

The Guardian provided further details on the reports of sailors attempting to jump overboard:

Military families and Congress members are sounding the alarm about an intensifying mental health crisis onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, as its 5,000 sailors and marines endure a record-breaking deployment at sea tied to the war with Iran.

Two leading specialist military papers, the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes, are reporting that there have been multiple attempts by sailors to jump overboard as poor conditions and mental stresses on the Lincoln reach the breaking point. The crew is in its ninth month at sea, and has spent 250 days consecutively without making land – a record for an aircraft carrier in modern times.

Worried families vented their anxieties about loved ones onboard the Lincoln at an emotional town hall meeting with navy leaders in San Diego last Thursday, Stars and Stripes reported. One spouse among the 200 or so family members said that her husband had texted her that day saying “he hopes he doesn’t wake up tomorrow”.

The families’ worries were expressed directly to navy leadership, represented at the town hall by the acting navy secretary, Hung Cao, and other top officials.

A woman at the meeting told Cao that the navy had “broken trust between us and the leadership”, the paper reported.

The Navy Times gave details of thwarted suicide attempts onboard the aircraft carrier during the current deployment. Annabelle Loma told the outlet that her husband had tried to jump overboard after his spell at sea kept being extended.
