It’s now under investigation after a lawyer filed a formal complaint, but the details in the allegations are stunning: A black federal judge allegedly boasted of her “black excellence” and then whined that a lawyer, a Latino, was suffering from “white mediocrity.”
Corrected, she then claimed the Latino presented as “white.”
According to Bloomberg Law, the fight involves Ada Brown, a federal judge in Dallas.
Her aggressive tongue-lashing prompted lawyer Ezra Young to file a misconduct complaint.
Young was representing a black woman professor suing over a tenure decision.
The judge, in a hearing in the case, “accused Young of mistreating black attorneys, took ‘judicial notice’ of her own background in making findings against Young, and repeatedly referred to Young, who is Latino, as being white.”
Brown had ordered the hearing after she already had revoked Young’s ability to practice law in her courtroom so she could decide whether to punish him further with sanctions.
Her comments included: “I think what’s happening here, quite candidly, is you are very intimidated for some reason, Mr. Young, with black excellence, in light of your white mediocrity. Yeah. Right? I mean, you — I’m — you look like a white man, right?”
Young explained he is Latino.
“Well, you are white-presenting; is that fair to say?” Brown charged.
The judge also implied Young made up information, and confirmed she scoured Young’s media profiles.
Young’s complaint cites the possibility of the judge suffering from a mental condition.
Her docket is on hold for the duration of a review, and Brown has been ordered to have a psychiatric examination.
She denied doing anything wrong.
But, the report said, Andre Davis, a former Fourth Circuit judge who previously served as a federal trial judge in Baltimore, said the purported conduct shows “a clear pattern of inappropriate and abusive behavior by Judge Brown that reflects violations of numerous provisions of the Code of Conduct for Federal Judges.”
The report said Brown repeatedly has suggested Young should faced punishment for his work in her courtroom.
The judge has a history of antagonism toward Young, one time calling him a “Chad,” a male version of a “Karen.”
The judge blocked Young from working in her courtroom, then summoned him back to claim he had posted court filings on his personal website, which he denied.
Young confirmed the only black animus in the case was being raised by “this court.”
