WATCH: President Trump Fields Questions on American Monuments and the Fort Hood Terrorist — His Answers Are Blunt

President Trump was handed two questions that could have produced the usual careful, consultant-approved answers.

He did not give them.

Asked about the campaign to tear down American monuments, Trump named the men whose statues he intends to defend.

Then came a question about the planned firing-squad execution of Fort Hood mass killer Nidal Hasan — and the furious backlash over the Pentagon’s decision to let the public watch it.

Trump did not retreat there, either.

The first exchange came as the president discussed his administration’s push to restore and protect monuments targeted during the 2020 riots.

“We protect Lincoln. We protect Washington,” Trump said.

“We protect Thomas Jefferson.” He also pointed to the Christopher Columbus statue now standing near the White House.

LFG! Donald Trump just told the leftists who want to rip down American history statues to SCREW OFF

“We protect Lincoln.”

The administration has already backed those words with action.

The White House’s 2026 Columbus Day proclamation lays out the administration’s position in writing. Trump proclaimed October 12 as Columbus Day and described the explorer as a symbol of courage, faith and perseverance.

The proclamation also points to a concrete action: the installation of a 13-foot replica of the Baltimore Columbus monument on the White House grounds. The original had stood for more than three decades after its 1984 dedication by President Ronald Reagan.

Rioters pulled that statue down and threw it into Baltimore Harbor on July 4, 2020. The replacement near the White House turned Trump’s answer into more than rhetoric — it became a visible reversal of what happened during that summer.

That would have been enough for one news cycle.

But the next exchange was even more direct.

A reporter asked Trump whether he stood by the decision to execute Hasan by firing squad as critics attack the administration over plans to livestream it.

“Death penalty through firing squad,” Trump replied. “And he deserves it.”

Here is the exchange:

LET'S GO! President Trump is STANDING BY his decision to PUBLICLY EXECUTE the Fort Hood shooter, despite the leftist backlash

“DEATH PENALTY THROUGH FIRING SQUAD! And he DESERVES it!”

Hasan is not awaiting trial. His case went through the military justice system years ago.

The Army’s official announcement says Hasan was convicted in 2013 of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder for the November 5, 2009 attack at Fort Hood.

The Army has scheduled his execution for 1 p.m. on December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood — the same installation where he opened fire on soldiers preparing to deploy. The announced method is a military firing squad.

According to the Army, the secretary of the Army sent a recommendation to the secretary of war, who then made a recommendation to the president. Trump approved the sentence, completing the executive review required before the Army could set a date.

Hasan admitted at his court-martial that he was the shooter. A military jury sentenced him to death after hearing evidence that he killed 13 people and wounded 32 more inside the Soldier Readiness Processing Center.

The controversy now is not mainly about whether Hasan committed the massacre. It is about how the government intends to carry out his sentence — and whether the execution should be broadcast.

The Associated Press reported that Pentagon officials confirmed the firing-squad execution will be livestreamed, though the government has not yet released the viewing platform or detailed access rules.

The report notes that this would be the first U.S. military execution in more than 65 years. The last military execution occurred in 1961, while the last firing-squad execution by the military took place shortly after World War II.

Legal experts also told the outlet that Hasan could still seek habeas review in civilian federal court, potentially delaying the December date. That means the schedule is official, but further litigation remains possible.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has been just as blunt as Trump about the plan.

In remarks released by the department, Hegseth called the firing-squad sentence a “no-brainer.” He said the execution would take place at Fort Hood at 1 p.m. — matching the place and hour of Hasan’s attack — and would be carried out by soldiers with rifles.

Hegseth’s explanation:

Secretary Hegseth was asked about the execution of Nidal Hasan:

“No-brainer—execution by firing squad…

Of course we're doing it at Fort Hood. We're going to do it at 1 o'clock—which is when he did it. It's going to be soldiers with rifles executing the firing squad.” pic.twitter.com/QqjJrAZK41

Critics have called the livestream plan a spectacle. Supporters see it as public accountability for one of the deadliest attacks ever carried out on an American military installation.

Trump’s answer did not attempt to split the difference.

That was the thread running through both exchanges: on the monuments and on Hasan, he treated the underlying decisions as settled.

No retreat. No tortured explanation.

No apology.

Just two unmistakable answers — and two fights the president is plainly willing to have in public.

What do you think about Trump’s answers — and should Hasan’s execution be livestreamed?
