President Trump Brings Columbus Day Back To The White House In Defiant Celebration Of Western Civilization

President Trump turned the White House into a celebration of Christopher Columbus on Friday, putting faith, courage, discovery and Western civilization back at the center of an American holiday the Left spent years trying to erase.

The East Room was filled with Italian-American leaders and supporters as tenor Christopher Macchio sang the National Anthem and President Trump entered to honor the explorer whose 1492 voyage changed the course of history.

The message was unmistakable: Columbus Day is back, and the United States will no longer apologize for remembering the people and traditions that helped build the nation.

The White House carried the full celebration live:

President Trump’s celebration followed a proclamation that formally designates October 12 as Columbus Day and directly rejects the campaign to scrub the explorer from America’s public memory.

The White House describes Columbus as a man of valor, adventure and ingenuity whose voyage carried the traditions of Western civilization across the Atlantic and opened a path that ultimately led to the founding of the United States.

The proclamation recounts how Columbus left Spain in August 1492 with roughly 90 men aboard the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María, then spent more than two punishing months crossing an ocean whose dangers were largely unknown to Europeans. It also emphasizes the Christian faith that sustained his mission and the cross he raised after landfall.

President Trump directs Americans to honor Columbus with appropriate ceremonies and orders the flag displayed on public buildings. He also vows that radical activists will not be allowed to erase Columbus’s legacy or the larger story of exploration, faith and national inheritance that his voyage represents.

That is a sharp reversal from the Biden years, when the federal government elevated “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” alongside the long-established national holiday and political activists treated Columbus statues as targets.

Friday’s event restored the original name without hesitation.

The opening captured the patriotic character of the celebration, with President Trump saluting as the anthem filled the East Room:

The celebration also centered on a 13-foot Columbus statue now standing on the White House campus.

Its story makes Friday’s ceremony even more significant.

The Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations explains that the monument is a replica of the Christopher Columbus statue dedicated by President Ronald Reagan in Baltimore in 1984. Rioters tore the original down and threw it into Baltimore Harbor on July 4, 2020, during the wave of destruction aimed at historical monuments.

Italian-American leaders recovered the damaged pieces and spent years rebuilding the statue with help from sculptors, donors and community organizations. The restored monument was installed beside the White House in March 2026, on the north side of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

The organization says its placement recognizes Italian-American history and preserves a memorial that activists had tried to destroy. President Trump’s administration gave that rescued statue a protected place in the heart of the nation’s capital.

That journey—from a harbor after a mob attack to the grounds of the White House—is a fitting symbol of the larger cultural fight.

The people who pulled statues down in 2020 were never satisfied with debating history. They wanted the public square emptied of heroes, faith, courage and national gratitude so their own bleak ideology could take the vacant space.

President Trump has answered by rebuilding, restoring and honoring what they tried to destroy.

The East Room was already packed before the president arrived, showing the depth of support among Americans who refused to surrender the holiday:

Columbus Day also carries a special place in Italian-American history.

For generations, the holiday has honored families who endured discrimination, built communities, served in uniform, created businesses and strengthened the American culture they proudly joined.

President Trump’s proclamation explicitly recognizes those contributions and connects them to the values of faith, family, courage and love of country.

That framing is bigger than one explorer or one statue.

A country that is ashamed of its inheritance will eventually lose the confidence to defend itself. A country that remembers the courage, sacrifice and faith behind its creation has something solid to pass to the next generation.

President Trump chose remembrance.

He took a holiday the Left wanted diluted, placed it in the East Room, surrounded it with American flags and made clear that the nation’s story belongs to the American people—not to the vandals who tried to throw it into the harbor.
