President Donald Trump on Friday expressed sweeping skepticism that the Democratic Senate candidate running in Kansas will keep his promise to be a moderate voice in Congress, as the White House seeks to boost Sen. Roger Marshall’s (R-KS) bid for reelection.
Kansas has an interesting political dynamic: It typically favors Republicans but backed a Democratic governor to lead the state. Marshall handily won his last Senate election by double digits, but has faced a tougher race in his latest bid against Democrat Adam Hamilton, with the latest polling showing Hamilton with a 4-point lead in a shocking twist.
This week, Trump sought to boost Marshall by appearing on a conservative talk show in Kansas. The president sought to shatter the image Hamilton has fought to build in the largely red state as a centrist politician, warning radio host Pete Mundo that he will swiftly fall in lockstep with the Democratic Party if voters send him to Congress.
“He will vote for Chuck Schumer, and he will take away your guns,” Trump said on KCMO’s Mundo in the Morning, referring to the Senate Minority Leader. “He’s a radical left guy. Take away your guns. Take away everything, and I just don’t see how they can have that in Kansas, frankly.”
“He’s a pastor, I guess, and you know, his church is all in turmoil. He’s caused turmoil with the church because he’s so liberal, and you know, you have people breaking away,” the president continued. “And he was never good for the farmer. He never went after anything, so I don’t really understand it.”
Trump’s message comes after Hamilton wrote an op-ed published Friday morning that claimed he would stand up to his party if he was elected if it gets “something wrong.”
“If Democrats get something wrong, I’ll be the first to say so,” Hamilton wrote in The Star. “I’ve been a registered Republican, a registered Democrat and an independent, and the person on the ballot has always mattered more to me than the letter after their name. I’m a Kansan first, and I’ll go to Washington to work for all of Kansas.”
After attacking Hamilton, Trump praised Marshall, calling him “the most effective person for farmers and ranchers” and describing him as “one of the best senators.”
“He loves Kansas, and I just want to make sure he’s in good shape. I would imagine he would be, but just nobody does more for the farmers as a group,” Trump said. “You can’t do better than Roger Marshall. I’d let you know if you could.”
“I know the senators. I know the good ones. I know the bad ones,” the president continued. “And some aren’t — I’m not thrilled with some, to be honest. But with Roger Marshall, it’s not even a contest.”
‘WE ALL HAVE OUR LIMITATIONS’: HOW LONG WILL MAGA KEEP WATCHING THE TRUMP SHOW?
In a lighter moment, the president, an avid sports fan, was asked to reveal his favorite NFL quarterback. Trump praised Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, saying “he knows how to win.”
“I see those little wispy passes under somebody’s arms,” the president laughed. “You have a 6-foot-6 guy running up with the arms up, and he throws it in between his armpits.”
