President Donald Trump described Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El Sayed as a “Muslim Brotherhood guy” on Thursday.

Trump made the comments while previewing an upcoming trip to Michigan in support of Republican nominee Mike Rogers during a White House Rose Garden lunch for law enforcement officials.

“We want to keep our country away from this guy,” Trump told the crowd. “His name is Abdul, but I call him Mohammed Abdul el Sayed, and he’s a Muslim Brotherhood guy, 100%, 100%, he’s a Muslim Brotherhood guy.”

Trump added that el Sayed, who could be America’s first Muslim senator if elected, does not like “our country at all.”

“He was saying all bad things from a few years ago,” he said. “He was saying very bad things about a certain place in Michigan that’s a very revered place. Just saying horrible things about it. He didn’t want to be there. He hates our country, so I hope that he is defeated. I can’t imagine he won.”

El Sayed, a Michigan native of Egyptian descent, has denied having ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Yet, the Washington Free Beacon unearthed old social media posts from el Sayed’s half-sister claiming their mother and other family members had ties to the group. El Sayed has denied the claims, saying it is “hearsay evidence from a tweet.”

The Michigan Senate race presents Republicans’ best pickup opportunity, considering it is to replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI). El Sayed and Rogers are technically in a statistical tie, with the Democrat, on average, having a 3-percentage-point edge, according to RealClearPolitics.

Earlier, Trump alluded to losing his voice as he headlines multiple political rallies a week, less than a month before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, contending that his presence was “having a big impact” in competitive races.

“I think we’re getting a lot of people elected, and we have some, quite a few stops to make,” he continued. “So it’s a lot. I just hope my voice holds out. If my voice holds out, we’re going to be in great shape. You know, it is one voice after all. You could maybe get one of those beautiful robots that they make nowadays and make them look just like me, and you wouldn’t know the difference. They make them pretty good. Send them out on the trail. I could sit home and watch them on television. But I love doing it. Actually, I have a lot of fun. The crowds are so energizing. You’ve never seen anything like it. It’s tens of thousands of people just going crazy, and it’s been that way from the beginning.”

Trump has traveled this week alone to Alaska, Arizona, Montana, Nevada, and Ohio, in addition to weekend events planned in Florida, Georgia, and Kentucky.
