New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has discovered that the hateful communist base he has cultivated does not care about the intricacies of governing, and he has no one to blame but himself.
Mamdani attended a memorial last week for the victims of the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks that took place in Israel three years ago. No one is (or, at least, should be) under the impression that Mamdani actually cares about the 1,200 Israeli civilians who were murdered by Palestinian terrorists, but attending the memorial is quite literally the least he can do as the mayor of a city with a sizable Jewish population. (A Jewish population that is quickly souring on Mamdani, for obvious reasons.)
FIVE QUESTIONS MAMDANI DESPERATELY HOPES REPORTERS NEVER ASK ABOUT GAZA
Mamdani is an antisemite constrained by the realities of politics, but his supporters have no such restrictions. Thus, they showed up to the memorial to heckle him for daring to (pretend to) show any sympathy toward the murdered civilians, booing him and chanting, “Zohran, you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide.” Mamdani supporters also protested him at City Hall for failing to be pro-Palestinian enough after he failed to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as he had futilely promised he would.
Mamdani is also facing blowback from supporters over his stance on policing. After an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot a criminal illegal immigrant in the city, Mamdani’s supporters began pushing for him to oust the city’s police commissioner, Jessica Tisch. Tisch is a well-respected holdover from Eric Adams’s tenure as mayor, and Mamdani has chosen to work with her despite his personal hatred of police. Mamdani is now reportedly upset that his supporters, including House candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, are undermining him by trying to push Tisch out, as they also pressure Mamdani to eliminate the New York Police Department’s Strategic Response Group.
NEW YORK SOCIALIST HOUSE CANDIDATE CALLS FOR POLICE COMMISSIONER TO STEP DOWN AFTER ICE SHOOTING
This is the hateful base Mamdani has cultivated. These are his ideological comrades, the people he pandered to when he promised to arrest Netanyahu during his mayoral campaign and trashed police during his state Assembly campaign. If Mamdani were still an assemblyman, he would likely be out there with them, protesting the remembrance of Oct. 7 victims and calling for Tisch’s firing alongside Avila Chevalier. Since he ascended to a higher office, though, he must actually try to govern New York City, and so his supporters now view him as complicit in everything he and they railed against for years.
Mamdani deserves no sympathy, of course. He has shown throughout his career that he stands arm in arm with the very people turning on him now. He is just as hateful as they are, limited only by having to play the game of politics as New York City’s mayor. The Democrats pandering to these antisemitic communists should take note, though. If they are willing to turn on their poster boy, they are willing to throw you to the wolves without a second thought.
