Summary

  • LaKesha Womack, a Democratic congressional candidate in North Carolina, was served with a felony criminal summons last week.
  • Her opponent, incumbent Tim Moore, says someone with an “unresolved felony charge” should not be taken seriously as a candidate
  • Moore says he understands and shares voter concerns about affordability.

A Democratic nominee for Congress in North Carolina, LaKesha Womack was served with a felony criminal summons at her own campaign rally last week. Her opponent, incumbent Republican Tim Moore is now questioning her ability to serve the people of their district.

The inciting incident occurred seven years ago, when Womack allegedly failed to return a rental car valued at $20,000. Now she has been summoned to appear in court one week after the election.

The original summons was issued in January 2020 but was not successfully delivered to Womack. The summons and police incident report alleges that Womack failed to return a rented 2019 Toyota Corolla, valued at $20,000, by the deadline of Oct. 23, 2019.

According to North Carolina law, if Womack willfully failed to return the car, she could be guilty of a Class H felony, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to 39 months and possible fines. Womack originally addressed the summons in a video posted online, saying she did knowingly not return the rental car on time, though she did not comment on where the car is now or whether it has been returned.

She has not responded to the Daily Signal’s request for comment.

“It’s just striking to me that someone running for Congress had an unresolved felony charge,” her opponent, Republican incumbent Tim Moore told the Daily Signal. “If she can’t manage her own personal affairs any better than that, how does she think she can make decisions for the good of this district.”

Moore claimed that the investigation she is under does not make her a winnable candidate in the district but that in this climate “you just never know.”

“With the investigation she’s under, is not someone who should be taken as a serious candidate serving the United States Congress,” he continued. “There ought to be scrutiny applied for something like a pending felony.”

Moore told the Daily Signal about his “shoe leather” campaign. The incumbent has knocked on over 60,000 doors with his team as part of get-out-the-vote efforts. He told the Daily Signal his constituents are concerned and upset about affordability, a concern he says he shares.

“I think there’s things that we’ve done that to help, but I don’t think we’ve done enough to help, and so I share that concern, and I want to see us address a lot of that, like fuel prices, groceries, healthcare,” Moore said.

“These are things that we can get done, and I think folks are looking at those pocketbook issues, but they’re also frankly looking at the qualifications of candidates and what a person can do in a job and can the person do the job,” he continued.
