Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers due to a superficial blood clot in his calf.
“On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf. He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report,” the team announced.
“Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia,” it continued.
“Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter. On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority,” it added.
ESPN shared further:
Asked about the injury Wednesday, Hurts indicated he got “nicked” against the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 4 while hinting that the lead-up to the Jaguars game was not ordinary.
“It was a very unique experience, to say the least. I don’t want to get into the details of kind of leading up to the game and whatnot, but got nicked up in the Rams game,” he said.
Hurts did not take the field until right before the opening kickoff against Jacksonville and rode the stationary bike between series. He indicated both actions were related to the calf.
Hurts completed 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown in a 19-17 loss to the Jaguars
Tanner McKee is expected to start the home game in place of Hurts against the Panthers.
The 28-year-old Hurts has eight touchdowns and three interceptions with 933 yards passing this season for the Eagles. He’s led the Eagles to two Super Bowl appearances and earned MVP honors after they beat the Kansas City Chiefs to win the championship in the 2024 season.
Pat McAfee discussed the star quarterback’s blood clot on Thursday:
"Jalen Hurts is out for Sunday due to a superficial blood clot..
He can't play football until this situation is solved and he's out indefinitely" ~

The Eagles are currently dealing with numerous injuries early in the season.
NBC News explained further:
Starting running back Saquon Barkley and starting receiver DeVonta Smith both didn’t practice Wednesday because of hamstring injuries. Guard Landon Dickerson and receiver Dontayvion Wicks were also limited participants due to knee and hamstring injuries, respectively.
Earlier this month, right tackle Lane Johnson, widely considered to be one of the best players at his position, announced his retirement from the team, citing personal and family priorities as he chose to focus on his mental health.
Philadelphia has struggled mightily on offense so far this season. Entering Week 6, the Eagles rank second-to-last in total yards per game, 28th is passing yards per game, and 29th in points per game.
Philadelphia’s backup quarterback is Tanner McKee, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
