Several Democrat-run cities across the United States are in the decay process thanks to their left-wing policies. Perhaps none is dying faster than socialist Seattle.
Data from the real estate company Redfin shows that Seattle has a higher share of residents looking to move out of state than any other major metro area in the country. Per capita, more than double the number of residents want to move out of Washington, from Seattle, than the second-place city and state (San Jose, California). In raw numbers, the only city with more people looking to move out of state is New York City, which has nearly 7.8 million more people than Seattle and only about 2,000 more who want to move out.

Seattle lost more than 13,000 jobs in 2025 thanks to taxes and employment regulations, leaving 35% of downtown Seattle’s office and retail spaces vacant. Seattle giants such as Starbucks, Amazon, and Microsoft, which are being targeted by the city’s socialist mayor and by state Democrats hoping to extract more tax revenue from them, have cut hundreds of jobs. As a result, the city has had to wrestle with budget deficits for years.

Perhaps the biggest sign that Seattle is a dying city, though, is its children population. A five-year census from 2020-2024 found that six of Seattle’s census tracts counted zero children among their population. Another 23 census tracts had fewer than 100 children. Seattle has about 109,500 children, roughly the same number as it did in 1950.

In 1950, Seattle had a population of around 468,000, making up around 23% of the city’s population. Now, Seattle has a population of nearly 785,000, dropping the percentage to around 14%. Seattle has added more than 300,000 people in the last 75 years, and yet the number of children has remained the same.
Is there cause for optimism for Seattle’s future? Not at all. The city is still artificially increasing the costs of goods and services with its employment regulations, most recently its minimum wage for food delivery gig workers. Seattle (and Washington state) Democrats have learned nothing, and not their gem of an Emerald City is being hollowed out underneath their very noses. Seattle isn’t raising a new generation of residents, and it is becoming so expensive to live in that it won’t be able to bring in new residents to replace the ones who are already leaving. It is not a winning formula for the future.
