A mother in Missouri has been sentenced for killing her own baby — sort of.
But she had the murder charges against her dropped, though she admitted to killing her two-year-old daughter.
I have to ask the obvious question up front: Why is that become such a common thread lately?
The mother of the dead infant confessed that she did indeed put her baby girl in the oven, where she was literally cooked to death.
Mariah Thomas, nevertheless, was just sentenced on the lesser charges relating to the case, as announced this morning by a CBS News affiliate out of Kansas City:
The story rocked the nation 2 years ago when it was first reported.
The murder charge would only emerged as the investigation took shape.
But the initial charges were simply child endangerment based on the mother’s claim that it was all an accident, as referenced in this early report from KSDK, and NBC News affiliate out of St. Louis, as the case kicked off back in 2024:
Now, those eventual murder charges have been wiped from the docket.
A plea deal was reached, allowing Thomas to avoid the penalties of a potential murder conviction for killing her own baby, according to this morning’s coverage from a Fox News affiliate out of Kansas City:
As a husband and father of five, with our sixth on the way, I can’t even imagine the horror of such a mistake.
And that’s what Thomas claimed it was; that was the core of her entire defense against the murder charge.
It was all just a terrible and tragic mistake.
But honestly — even in the hectic extremes of raising kids — I can’t imagine a scenario in which my wife could literally put one of our babies INSIDE THE OVEN…?
And not at some point during that process, or at least immediately thereafter, realize what she was doing.
But the plea deal that was agreed upon in this case really didn’t allow that important decisive question to be fully considered, did it?
The case against Thomas ended much different than this case from 2018, in which ANOTHER mother did almost the exact same thing with her 1 and 2 year old boys:
But unlike Mariah Thomas’ case, those 2018 Georgia murder charges stuck for Lamora Williams.
She’ll still be serving time when Thomas is set free.

The unbelievable nature of these cases and the frequency of their occurrence continues to amaze me.
While Za’riah’ mother will spend more than a decade of her life in prison for the crime of child endangerment…
Does this plea deal simply pile on more dangerous precedent?
At what point does the righteous judgement for killing an innocent child become merely a question regarding sanity or even mental cognizance?
Does pure negligence and a lack of adequate responsibility just not matter anymore in a court of law, ever?
I have long questioned the multi-layered approach that American law has used to handle killings; murder, manslaughter, and the like.
Of course, there are differences that make some distinction necessary — but has our tendency towards never-ending degrees of complexity in law brought us to the point of never-ending degrees of LOOPHOLES?
As I survey the growing number of cases similar to what I’ve reported on in this story, that is my honest takeaway.
And it is a very dangerous territory we now find ourselves in, as a result.
