Olympic Gold Medalist Takes Aim At WNBA Over Stance On Trans Players: ‘An 80/20 Issue’

Hogshead recently launched a Change.org petition asking the league to clarify the meaning of “woman” in its eligibility rules. The petition has collected more than 11,000 signatures since its Aug. 14 launch.

“We’re calling for the WNBA to clarify that its eligibility rules are for women only,” Hogshead told Fox News Digital. “If you wanna participate, you have to be a certain age, and you have to be a female.”

Hogshead said she hopes the petition ultimately reaches 100,000 signatures.

“It’s an 80/20 issue across the country, so we can do it,” she said. “We have well over a million people who’ve engaged with our materials that we put out about the petition. We just gotta get them to sign on.”

The WNBA’s 2026 collective bargaining agreement states that “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” However, the agreement does not further define “woman” or include specific language addressing gender identity or sex assigned at birth.

The dispute centers on a line in the WNBA CBA.

Article XIII, Section 1(a) states that “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” The agreement, however, does not define “women,” establish a self-identification standard, or spell out a separate policy for transgender players.

That ambiguity is the loophole central to former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White’s draft declarations. Both have said they want to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft after identifying as women.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and team executives met on Aug. 12 to discuss the issue, but the meeting did not produce a definitive public policy, with the league releasing a statement: “There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA, and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.”

The league’s position appeared to harden on Monday.

Front Office Sports reported that its sources said Kanter and White “are not eligible to play.”

The WNBA, however, declined to address the two directly, and as per a league source, did not want to “give oxygen to efforts designed to mock the league or use this topic to demean and marginalize others.”

Meanwhile, the debate has spilled beyond league offices and into arenas. The atmosphere around several WNBA games, particularly those involving the Indiana Fever, has become increasingly tense.
