President Trump is taking the midterm fight straight to Washington for one final closing argument before voters decide who controls Congress.
After finishing a two-state rally swing through Iowa and Kansas, the president is scheduled to speak at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool at 2 p.m. Eastern on Monday.
The message could not be clearer: the America First agenda is on the ballot, and the president is asking Republicans to finish the job.
President Trump laid out the stakes in Kansas, naming election integrity, public safety and the fight against corruption as priorities for the next Congress.
That is a real governing program, not the empty language Americans have heard for years from politicians who suddenly discover the border, crime and election security when their names appear on a ballot.
The White House says Monday’s address will highlight accomplishments delivered by the Trump administration and congressional Republicans. It will also make the case for keeping a Republican majority capable of turning the next round of promises into law.
The administration’s own weekend recap points to the record President Trump will carry into that speech.
Associated Press reports that President Trump spent Sunday in Dubuque and Salina, where he predicted an America First sweep and worked to protect Republican majorities in both chambers. He told the Iowa crowd that voters were poised to elect America First Republicans up and down the ballot.
The president has held more than two dozen rallies across 19 states since October 1. More than 54 million early and mail ballots had already been cast by Sunday, raising the stakes for the final Election Day turnout operation.
The final weekend also exposed a stunning fracture inside the Democratic Party. Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers after she was pushed away from an event for Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
That split forced national Democrats to scramble publicly behind El-Sayed with Election Day nearly here. It also gave Republicans a remarkable last-minute opening in a Senate contest that could help determine control of Congress.
Axios reports that a White House official confirmed the 2 p.m. address and said President Trump will focus on the record of his administration and congressional Republicans. The speech is expected to serve as the president’s formal closing message before the midterms.
The location gives President Trump a national stage in the capital after a month of relentless campaign travel. The White House official said the address will also cover the administration’s work in Washington and its effort to restore the nation’s capital.
The timing leaves Republicans with one final nationally focused appeal before polls open Tuesday. With control of both the House and Senate at stake, the address gives President Trump a chance to connect his record directly to the congressional majorities needed to keep advancing it.
By the time Air Force One lifted out of Kansas, the road-rally phase of the midterms was officially over.
Now comes the closing argument.
Republican voters have heard the choice. One path keeps the border secure, protects American energy, restores common sense, defends women and girls, and gives President Trump a Congress ready to advance his agenda.
The other path hands power back to Democrats who have spent two years fighting that agenda at every turn.
President Trump has done the travel, made the case and put his record in front of the country. On Tuesday, the decision belongs to the voters.
