There already have been numerous horror stories documented: Backache? Assisted suicide is your answer. Depressed? Same solution.

Since Canada approved an assisted suicide scheme several years ago, called Medical Assistance in Dying, it has been expanded multiple times and has grown at an explosive rate.

The nation’s death toll from the procedure has surpassed 100,000 and now about one death in 10 is caused by deliberate administration of medications or procedures intended to leave the patient dead.

Pro-life interests long have warned of the agenda which now no longer even requires a terminal diagnosis before someone can be killed.

And now those who are insiders in the program have issued a warning.

It is the Christian Institute in the United Kingdom that cited a New York Times piece by Madeline Li and Gary Rodin, professors of psychiatry at the University of Toronto, who suggest more time to pause and reflect on such a decision.

Li and Rodin are medics who helped implement MAID.

They wrote, “Too many people are receiving the procedure without the opportunity for careful reflection about it with a health provider. In some cases, patients are being approved who should not be.”

And, “Today, Canada’s system is one of the most permissive in the world, allowing assisted dying for almost any form of subjectively intolerable suffering that has a medical basis, or even for medically unexplained physical symptoms. This latitude may contribute to Canada having the fastest growth rate of assisted dying in the world, increasing 16-fold in the eight years since legalisation.”

The program was instituted in 2016, and since then has been expanded many times to add additional age groups and additional qualifiers, to the point that no one needs now to have any “incurable” condition to be killed.

That can happen even if they suffer from a mental illness.

The Institute reported, “Li and Rodin have both assessed whether patients are eligible for MAID. While they state that it is not their place to dissuade others from seeking medical help to kill themselves, they argue that Canada’s system ‘is no longer an option of last resort.'”

The report confirms they fear that many doctors “have come to see their primary role to be making sure their patients meet the legal eligibility requirements to qualify for assisted dying” and warned that the focus has become more “on whether patients can get an assisted death and not enough on whether they should.”

They cited the case of a woman in her 70s who had “sought and received” approval and her reason was that she had lost the ability to cook.

They explained, “Through counseling, she came to understand that her family valued who she was, not what she did for them. She decided not to go through with ending her life, at least for now. That Christmas, her family gathered and she sat proudly at the table, while others did the cooking and serving.”
