Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signaled a potential breakthrough in peace negotiations Wednesday, declaring that he is willing to freeze the current front lines in the war with Russia as part of an agreement to end the yearslong conflict.
The stunning admission came during an appearance on Fox & Friends, where Zelensky discussed President Donald Trump’s efforts to bring the devastating war to a negotiated conclusion.
After years of fighting, the Ukrainian leader acknowledged that an immediate ceasefire could offer a realistic path toward peace, even if Russian troops remain in territory they currently occupy.
“Yes, right now we have to freeze, and I think this is a real way to end this war. We call it a ceasefire … President Trump called it freeze and stop,” Zelensky said when asked whether he would accept halting the fighting along existing battle lines.
The remarks represent a significant development in the diplomatic struggle to end the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Trump has repeatedly pushed for a negotiated settlement, urging both sides to find a way to stop the bloodshed rather than allow the war to drag on indefinitely.
Zelensky’s latest comments suggest there may be room for an agreement centered on stopping active combat before resolving the more difficult territorial disputes.
However, the Ukrainian president made clear that any ceasefire would need to be accompanied by security commitments designed to prevent another Russian invasion.
“And of course, this is the minimum of what we need from Russia today – then of course we’ll go to President [Trump] and to Europeans and we’ll ask [for] security guarantees,” Zelensky added.
Those guarantees remain a major sticking point in negotiations, with Kyiv seeking assurances that Moscow would not use a temporary halt in fighting to regroup before launching another offensive.
The Ukrainian leader also drew a firm distinction between freezing the battlefield and formally surrendering territory to Russia.

When Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade asked whether Ukraine would consider giving up the Donbas region to secure peace, Zelensky rejected the suggestion.
He described such a concession as “not fair,” arguing that Russia should not receive additional Ukrainian territory through diplomatic pressure.
“They’re not winning on the battlefield. That’s why they want us to push using any kind of, you know, any kind of pressure on us to push us from our land. It’s not fair,” Zelensky said.
The distinction is critical because a ceasefire along existing front lines would not necessarily mean Ukraine legally recognizes Russian control over occupied territory.
Instead, the proposal could temporarily halt military operations while negotiations continue over borders, security arrangements and the conditions for a lasting settlement.
Volodymyr Zelensky‘s comments come as the Trump administration continues diplomatic efforts involving Kyiv and Moscow, including discussions with European allies about ending the war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Wednesday with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in Strelna, near St. Petersburg, according to the New York Post.
Whether Moscow would accept a ceasefire under the conditions outlined by Zelensky remains unclear.
The Ukrainian president acknowledged the mounting exhaustion caused by years of warfare but emphasized that Ukrainians do not want to abandon their homeland.
“People are tired, of course; we want to end this war as quickly as possible,” Zelensky said.
Although no peace agreement has been announced, Zelensky’s willingness to consider freezing the front lines marks a potentially important opening for Trump’s diplomatic efforts.
The central question now is whether Russia will agree to stop fighting and whether the United States and European nations can provide security guarantees acceptable to Ukraine.
