Texas Democrat James Talarico has made Jeffrey Epstein a campaign weapon against Republican Senate rival Ken Paxton, but new scrutiny is turning back on the Democrat over financial ties to a major donor with a documented association to the disgraced financier.
Talarico has repeatedly invoked Epstein on the campaign trail, including during a September appearance with survivors at a Dallas exhibit featuring millions of pages of Epstein-related records.
He used the event to accuse Paxton of failing to do enough to force the release of additional Justice Department records tied to Epstein and his network.
Talarico has also accused Paxton of offering “Epstein-style sweetheart deals to pedophiles,” making the scandal a recurring part of his campaign message.
But the Paxton campaign has pointed to outside groups supporting Talarico that have received major financial backing from Democratic megadonor Reid Hoffman, who has acknowledged past interactions with Epstein.
Hoffman has said he regretted meeting with Epstein and has denied any involvement in Epstein’s crimes.
The connection does not establish that Talarico personally had any relationship with Epstein, but it has opened him to attacks over the very issue he has used against his Republican opponent.
The renewed scrutiny comes as Talarico also faces questions over his own financial arrangements.
Talarico has campaigned on forcing “the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share of taxes,” yet business records show he formed an LLC tied to a prominent Austin accountant who openly markets advanced tax strategies to wealthy clients.
Talarico registered Nine Banded LLC with the Texas secretary of state on Sept. 16, 2025, just one week after entering the U.S. Senate race.
The company’s registered agent is Eric Pierre of Pierre Accounting, whose firm advertises “sophisticated tax and financial stewardship for high-net-worth individuals” and “advanced tax strategies.”
Pierre is also the author of “The Great Tax Escape: Why Making More Money Doesn’t Mean You Have to Pay More in Taxes,” a book focused on legal strategies for reducing tax liabilities.
In the book, Pierre describes a fictional business owner who worries about becoming one of those wealthy people who does not pay what he considers his fair share.

“I hear this kind of thing all the time,” Pierre writes, referring to Mark in a section titled “The Guilt Trap.” “It’s like we’ve been programmed to think that minimizing taxes is greedy or irresponsible. But let me tell you, that view isn’t just wrong—it’s potentially harmful to you, your family, and, believe it or not, to society as a whole.”
James Talarico signed a book deal with HarperCollins in March, and the LLC could potentially be used to handle income connected to advances or royalties, although there is no evidence that he has used the structure illegally or improperly.
The contrast has handed Republicans another line of attack against Talarico, whose campaign calls for a “fairer tax system” that would require billionaires, large corporations and wealthy Americans to contribute more.
The Jeffrey Epstein issue has meanwhile become an increasingly bitter feature of the Texas Senate race.
Talarico appeared alongside Epstein survivors in Dallas earlier this month and demanded that Paxton take legal action against the Justice Department to force the release of more records.
Paxton’s allies fired back by highlighting Hoffman’s support for groups backing Talarico.
Hoffman’s previous contacts with Epstein have been publicly documented, although Hoffman has said the meetings were related to fundraising and that associating with Epstein was a mistake.
There is no evidence that Talarico himself knew Epstein or participated in any wrongdoing connected to him.
Still, the fight has created an uncomfortable political counterattack for a candidate who has made Epstein-related allegations a prominent part of his case against Paxton.
