Texas Democrat James Talarico is being called out for delivering political lines with a familiar Hollywood ring.
Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports Republican Senate rival Ken Paxton, flagged remarks from Talarico that closely resemble dialogue from “The West Wing” and “The Shawshank Redemption,” accusing the Democrat of copying the lines nearly word for word.
One comparison involves a reflection on politics delivered by fictional White House press secretary C.J. Cregg in “The Stackhouse Filibuster,” an episode of “The West Wing.”
“And if politics brings out the worst in people, maybe people bring out the best,” Cregg says.
Talarico offered a slightly reworked version of the same thought.
“Politics can bring out the worst in people. But there are times when people can bring out the best in politics,” he said.
The second comparison reaches back to “The Shawshank Redemption,” in which Morgan Freeman’s character, Red, says, “Hope is a dangerous thing.”
Talarico’s version: “A little bit of Hope is a dangerous thing.”

The Democrat also included the phrase in a March 11 campaign Substack post following his primary victory, using it to describe the opportunity he saw for his party in Texas.
The scrutiny comes as Talarico and Paxton battle for a Senate seat in a closely watched November contest.
RealClearPolling’s average of surveys conducted Sept. 8-26 put Talarico at 47.6% and Paxton at 44.7%, a 2.9-percentage-point gap.

Individual surveys have shown different margins. A Big Data Poll conducted Sept. 24-26 had Talarico ahead 47% to 45%, while a Marist survey conducted Sept. 17-20 put him up 50% to 44%.
A Texas Southern University/YouGov survey conducted Sept. 15-19 showed a tighter contest, with Talarico at 47% and Paxton at 46%.
