Israel Launches Massive Four-Division Drill As Election Nears — One Expert Warns What Could Go Wrong

Israel has launched one of its largest border-defense drills in years, putting four divisions and the Israeli Air Force through surprise-attack scenarios just hours before voters head to the polls.

The two-day exercise stretches across northern and central Israel. Troops are rehearsing simultaneous infiltrations by land and air, the defense of civilian communities, and the rapid shift from stopping an attack to striking back.

Military officials say the drill was placed on the 2026 training calendar in advance. They insist the troop movements are not tied to a specific security incident, though the scale and election-week timing are impossible to ignore.

The first public notice laid out the election-week timing and the multi-front nature of the exercise:

An IDF press release says the Judea and Samaria Division, the 98th, 96th and 210th divisions, and the Air Force are all participating. The military described the exercise as part of an ongoing effort to absorb lessons from the war, sharpen operational procedures and strengthen the defense of communities.

The IDF also warned residents to expect unusually heavy movement of troops, aircraft and military vehicles in Northern and Central Command areas through Monday. Its official message was carefully calibrated: readiness is being raised, but the public should not mistake the activity for an unfolding attack.

Video and reporting from the opening phase show how broad the rehearsal is, with multiple fronts and several types of infiltration being tested at once:

Fox News reports that the exercise incorporates hard lessons from the October 7 attack and is designed to prepare forces for raids from Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and the West Bank, whether directed by Iran or launched by allied groups acting on their own.

That is where the danger becomes more complicated. Israeli security analyst Dr. Ehud Eilam warned that large troop movements can send a deterrent message while also being misread as preparations for a real attack.

With Israel and Iran watching each other closely, one side could decide it must strike first simply because it believes the other is about to move.

Eilam pointed to the 1973 Yom Kippur War, when Egypt and Syria used military exercises to mask preparations for an actual assault. Israeli intelligence treated the buildup as another drill until the coordinated attack began.

The historical lesson is brutal: an exercise can improve readiness, but it can also create the very uncertainty that makes a miscalculation more likely.

A second current report confirmed that the Air Force and both Northern and Central commands are participating through Monday:

The Israeli military began a preplanned exercise simulating a multifront attack on Sunday.

The drill will run through Monday in northern and central Israel, involving the air force and the military’s Northern and Central commands.

Israel National News reports that additional forces have been deployed, Air Force and air-defense readiness has been increased, and military leave has been suspended. The precautions come as Israel prepares for Tuesday’s national election and works to prevent Iran or allied terror groups from exploiting the political moment.

The drill follows a separate long-range Israeli air exercise near Iran’s border and an Iranian missile display earlier this month. In the current standoff, every exercise, flight and deployment is being read for hidden intent.

For Israel, the immediate goal is clear: make sure no enemy can use election day as an opening for another surprise attack. The deeper challenge is doing that without turning a show of readiness into the spark both sides say they want to avoid.
