Four sailors injured after landing ‘mishap’ on Eisenhower aircraft carrier

Four sailors were injured during a jet landing “mishap” on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower off the coast of Virginia on Monday, according to the Navy.

The incident unfolded around 6:18 p.m. when two naval aviators assigned to Carrier Air Wing 3 ejected from the aircraft. Shortly thereafter, they were rescued.

“Both aviators were safely returned to the ship and are being evaluated by medical personnel,” the Navy said in a statement. “Four shipboard personnel were also injured during the mishap and are receiving medical care. One Sailor is being transported to a Norfolk-area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.”

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower personnel’s training prepared them to handle the emergency.

“Our immediate priority is ensuring all personnel involved receive the care and support they need,” the Navy added. “Carrier crews regularly train for emergencies and unexpected situations during flight operations, and that training enabled the crew to respond quickly and safely.”

The Navy is investigating the cause of the mishap. The military branch promised to provide updates once more information is available.

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1977, departed from Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia on Monday.

The aircraft carrier was deployed to help support the U.S. military operations in the Gulf War and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The ship has not played a role in the U.S. war against Iran, but it did act as a deterrent for Iran and its proxies following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in 2023.
