Former NBA Star Arrested, Faces Assault Charge Of Causing “Bodily Injury Family Violence”

According to jail records, Smith had a $5,000 surety bond set by a Hunt County magistrate judge Tuesday afternoon. Smith apparently remained in jail as of midday Tuesday, according to jail records.

Smith’s representatives did not immediately respond to an ESPN message requesting comment.

The Royse City Police Department received an alert indicating the Southlake Police Department had issued a warrant for Smith, according to a release from Kirk Aldridge, the Royse City chief of police. Smith’s license plate was spotted on Interstate 30, northeast of Dallas. Officers identified Smith and arrested him.

Smith was driving with his brother, Aldridge stated. Police released the car to Smith’s brother when they arrested Smith.

Former New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers standout J.R. Smith was arrested in Texas on an assault charge Monday, per jail records and first reported by TMZ.

The official jail record lists both "bodily harm" and "family violence" in the charge description.

Smith, who played 16 seasons in the NBA, was named the Sixth Man of the Year with the Knicks in 2013, and won his first championship with the Cavaliers alongside LeBron James in the 2015-16 season.

Game 3 of that Finals between the Lakers and Heat on Oct. 4, 2020 was the last time Smith played in an NBA game.

He has yet to formally announce his NBA retirement.

Smith — who went straight from high school the pros — graduated in May with a Liberal Arts degree from North Carolina A&T, where he was a walk-on for the men’s golf team.

He recently played in amateur golf tournaments.
