Federal prosecutors have charged an 18-year-old Massachusetts man after investigators say he threatened to kill President Trump and talked about shooting up a school.

This was not treated as some ugly online outburst that could simply be ignored. Authorities say the investigation tied the suspect to four Instagram accounts filled with violent material, including alleged threats against the president and other people.

The Justice Department made clear why federal agents moved on the case:

“Trenton Touch is an individual whose alleged threats could not be ignored,” said United States Attorney Leah B. Foley of @DMAnews1 . “Threatening the President of the United States is a serious crime and is not protected free speech. My office will continue to work with our law… https://t.co/4RK62KSgKD

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts says law enforcement received information in September about four accounts carrying violent and threatening content. Investigators allege the same person controlled all four.

According to the federal account, a June direct message included a photograph of a firearm and the words “it’s time” along with an alleged threat to kill President Trump. Prosecutors also say the suspect praised mass shooters and repeatedly referenced the 2019 Christchurch massacre, which killed 51 people.

The charging announcement also says the accounts included an alleged threat to shoot up a school:

That combination—an alleged presidential death threat, alleged school-shooting talk, and a real firearm—put this case in a completely different category from ordinary online garbage.

NBC Boston reports that the case began after law enforcement learned of four Instagram accounts carrying violent content. Investigators later concluded that all four accounts were allegedly controlled by the same 18-year-old Tewksbury resident.

The local outlet says police obtained a court-authorized search of the residence after reviewing the online threats. Officers recovered a revolver-style handgun, and Tewksbury police said the suspect did not have the firearms identification card required to possess it.

Touch was arrested last week and remained in state custody when the federal charge was announced Thursday. The federal case is focused on the alleged presidential threat, while the government’s account also describes the school-shooting threat and repeated praise for mass killers as part of the evidence that made the messages impossible to dismiss as harmless talk.

Federal authorities say the search also turned up camouflage clothing, a ballistics helmet, military-style knives, and a hatchet. FBI Boston says its Joint Terrorism Task Force worked the case with Tewksbury police:

The defendant was scheduled to make his first federal court appearance on November 9. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.

The charge is only an accusation at this stage, and Touch is presumed innocent. Prosecutors still have to prove every element of the case in court.

Law enforcement does not have the luxury of shrugging off an alleged threat against the president when investigators also find a weapon and evidence pointing toward mass violence.

America has already watched political violence move from deranged online talk to bloodshed. Taking a specific threat seriously before another family or community pays the price is exactly what federal law enforcement should be doing.
