Democrats rushed to defend Rep. Ilhan Omar after federal agents searched her home Monday, with one House colleague accusing President Donald Trump of using a criminal investigation to score political points ahead of the midterm elections.
Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., attacked the search in a post on X, calling it “insanely corrupt” and alleging that Fox News had received advance notice.
Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out the search of the Minnesota Democrat’s home, a Justice Department spokesperson told NewsNation. The department confirmed the action was connected to a criminal probe.
“This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” the Justice Department said in the statement.
Beyer portrayed the raid as an election-season distraction, opening his attack with criticism of Trump’s handling of prices and the war.
“As [President] Trump’s popularity craters amid rising prices and his deeply unpopular war, everything he does is an attempt to distract his remaining followers,” Beyer wrote.

“But raiding the home of a member of the opposing party right before the election – and tipping off FoxNews in advance so they are on hand to publicize it – is insanely corrupt even for Donald Trump,” he added.
Ilhan Omar also took to X after the search, accusing the administration of “political intimidation.”
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”

The backlash extended to the top ranks of House Democratic leadership.
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., issued a joint statement calling the raid “deeply disturbing” and highlighting its proximity to Election Day.
“For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations,” the leaders said. “Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress and her family.”
