Democrat Rep. Hakeem Jeffries Claims Republicans Are Going To STEAL Midterms

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) told CNN he believes the Democrats are “on the verge” of taking back control of the House of Representatives — but he is also paranoid the Republicans have a devious trick up their sleeves to stop it from happening.

Jeffries shared his concern during a Sunday interview with reporter Manu Raju.

After Jeffries said the Dems will “very likely” take control of the House after the midterms — and make him the first Black Speaker in the process — Raju asked him if there was something in the back of his mind that makes him worried about it.

“Well, you have to assume, as we’ve done from the very beginning, that Republicans are going to try to come up with any diabolical scheme to prevent Nov. 3 from being a free and fair election,” Jeffries said.

“What do you mean by that?” Raju followed up.

“Well, we’ve been planning from the very beginning to push back against all of the voter suppression efforts that they’ve tried to jam down the throats of the American people,” Jeffries said. “Now up until this point, we’ve successfully stopped their scheming.”

Raju then asked, “but are you saying that’s the only way they can hold onto power?”

“I’ve been saying that from the beginning!” Jeffries said.

He did not share what moves in particular he is worried about Republicans pulling.

The Department of Justice is preparing for a large-scale effort to monitor the upcoming November midterm elections, with the goal of dispatching 1,000 election monitors to all 50 states on Election Day.

The agency regularly monitors polling places. But this year’s effort on Nov. 3 will more than double the number of federal monitors deployed during the 2022 midterms, when the DOJ under President Joe Biden sent out 388 people to polling places, confirmed by a DOJ official to PBS News.

A senior DOJ official who spoke on background with reporters during a briefing last week said these efforts on Nov. 3 will be guided by federal statutes. The monitors, who include DOJ lawyers, will not be deployed to early voting sites.

Traditionally, election monitoring is a way for the DOJ to ensure that voting rights laws are being followed.

The job of a DOJ election monitor has been historically “pretty passive,” said Stacey Young, executive director of Justice Connection, a support and legal network of former DOJ alumni. “They’re there to just do as their name suggests, which is to observe,” she said.
