Veteran Hollywood actor Tom Skerritt, whose unforgettable performances in “Top Gun,” “Alien” and the hit television drama “Picket Fences” made him one of the most recognizable faces in American entertainment, has died at the age of 93.

Skerritt passed away Wednesday, October 21, from natural causes, his family confirmed Thursday. The Emmy Award-winning actor leaves behind a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, with appearances in some of Hollywood’s most celebrated films.

His family announced the news in an emotional statement, remembering a man whose contributions extended well beyond the screen.

“We are heartbroken by his loss,” the family said. “While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity and the love he brought into our lives,” the statement continued.

“He cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world and helping others find and share their own voices.”

Skerritt became a household name through his ability to portray commanding authority figures, often playing military officers, law enforcement officials and fathers. His distinctive voice and rugged appearance helped establish him as a dependable presence in Hollywood for generations.

One of his most memorable performances came in the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun,” where he portrayed Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf, the seasoned naval aviator who trained Tom Cruise’s character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The film became a cultural phenomenon and remains one of the defining military action movies of its era.

Years earlier, Skerritt starred as Captain Dallas in Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking 1979 science-fiction horror film “Alien,” appearing alongside Sigourney Weaver. His performance helped establish the tense atmosphere that made the movie a landmark in the genre.

His Hollywood breakthrough came with Robert Altman’s 1970 war comedy “M*A*S*H,” in which he played Duke Forrest alongside Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould.

Other notable credits included “The Turning Point,” “The Dead Zone,” “Steel Magnolias,” “A River Runs Through It” and “Contact.”

While his film career brought international recognition, Skerritt also enjoyed tremendous success on television.

From 1992 to 1996, he starred as Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the CBS drama “Picket Fences,” portraying a small-town lawman navigating unusual crimes and complicated family relationships. The performance earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993.

Born August 25, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, Skerritt served in the United States Air Force before pursuing acting. He later studied at UCLA and made his feature film debut in the 1962 war drama “War Hunt.”

His military background remained an important part of his life. Skerritt helped establish the Red Badge Project, an organization that uses storytelling and creative writing to support military veterans dealing with psychological trauma.

He also maintained strong ties to the Pacific Northwest, where he supported independent filmmakers and helped create opportunities for emerging storytellers.

Skerritt continued acting into his later years, starring in the 2021 drama “East of the Mountains” and appearing in the 2025 film “Broke.”

He is survived by his wife, Julie Tokashiki, five children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His death marks the loss of another beloved figure from Hollywood’s golden generation of character actors.
