President Donald Trump on Monday urged Republicans to vote by mail in the upcoming midterm elections, despite having criticized the method in the past for its supposed susceptibility to fraud.
Trump issued the call during an impromptu press conference on the White House’s South Lawn en route to departing for a campaign event in Nebraska.
“I’d rather have them vote in person, but they can vote by mail if they want because we seem to have no choice,” Trump told reporters. “A lot of people want to vote by mail, but a lot of very good people also want to vote in person. You can do either.”
Trump reasserted, however, that “there is a lot of cheating in vote by mail, a lot of cheating all over.”
The president specifically singled out elections officials in Maricopa County, Arizona, for admitting over the weekend that they mailed out 3,100 early voting ballots before Wednesday’s official dissemination deadline. Maricopa County election officials blamed a third-party vendor for the mistake, but they have reiterated that the ballots remain valid since they were delivered to the correct addresses.
“It’s crooked,” Trump said of the incident. “They have to be ashamed of themselves … They got caught, and now they’re saying it was an error. Maricopa is a very, very dishonest county.”
On Saturday, Trump took to social media and released an accompanying video encouraging his supporters to vote by mail less than a month before the Nov. 3 elections.
