VIDEO: Texas Lawmaker Torches State Party Leadership In Sobering Midterms Reaction

Texas Comptroller Greg Huffines had harsh words for Texas Governor Greg Abbott and state Republican Party leadership in a sobering post-midterm elections speech. Huffines, Abbott and other state officeholders were soundly defeated at the ballot box amid historic Republican losses nationwide.

“It’s gonna be almost impossible to win this state back… I blame it on our leadership. I just do,” Huffines said while speaking at an election watch party. “I blame it on all the mushy middle people that wanna think ‘oh, they’re in the middle we wanna make everybody happy.’ Right, you sure did a good job of this mess,” he added while gesturing towards a state map showing historic Democrat gains.

“I blame it all on our leadership thinking they’re gonna go for four terms as governor, four terms as lieutenant governor… I mean, seriously? People are tired of the Republicans being in office. They couldn’t campaign on a policy issue,” Huffines continued.

He went on to state that the people of Texas, and Republican voters across the country, will bear the brunt of consequences stemming from Republican leadership failures. “They never cared about you. I served with them. They laugh and make fun of you and the grassroots. They never cared about our party platform. And they still don’t. They don’t care,” Huffines went on as the crowd listened in sobering silence.

“They don’t care at all. I don’t know if they care that they lost tonight. But I know there’s a lot of people that care. There’s a lot of great patriots. What are we going to do? Who are you going to call? There’s no one left.”

POLL: Did You Vote Republican In The Midterms?

“I blame this on @GregAbbott_TX. I blame it on @DanPatrick . I blame it all on our leadership. Thinking they’re going to go for four terms as Governor. Four terms as Lt. Governor. Seriously?! If they campaigned on lowering your property taxes all that did is remind everybody why… https://t.co/qwQeh6Fu4s pic.twitter.com/Hk8PGsA3Dj

Huffines had previously served one term in the Texas Senate from 2015 to 2019 before losing reelection. He challenged Abbott in the 2022 Republican gubernatorial primary, finishing third with about 12 percent of the vote.

Statewide, Democrats secured multiple offices long held by Republicans. Gina Hinojosa defeated Abbott for governor with approximately 53 percent of the vote, while Vikki Goodwin unseated Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick with about 52 percent.

James Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton for the U.S. Senate seat with roughly 55 percent of the vote, becoming the first Democrat to win a Texas U.S. Senate race since 1988.

Other Democratic candidates led or won races for attorney general, land commissioner, agriculture commissioner, and railroad commissioner. These outcomes marked the first time since 1994 that Democrats won statewide offices in Texas, ending more than three decades of continuous Republican control of those positions.
