Democrat Nominee Wins Seat Despite Dropping Out Of Race Over Health Issues

A Democrat who dropped out of his campaign nearly two months before Election Day still managed to defeat his Republican opponent in Iowa, delivering one of the more unusual results of the 2026 midterm elections.

Eric Armstrong, the Democratic nominee for Iowa’s 20th House District, defeated Republican Keith Jones on Tuesday despite announcing in September that he was stepping away from the campaign because of personal health problems.

Armstrong secured approximately 55.2% of the vote, compared with Jones’ 44.8%, according to reported election results.

The outcome was a surprising setback for Republicans, particularly because Armstrong had stopped actively campaigning weeks before voters headed to the polls.

The Democrat announced his decision to withdraw from the campaign in a Sept. 7 Facebook post, explaining that ongoing health issues required his immediate attention.

“Because I must prioritize my health and recovery at this time, I am stepping down from my campaign, effective immediately. This was a deeply difficult choice. However, I know it is the right one.”

Armstrong acknowledged that the physical and mental demands of campaigning had become difficult to manage while addressing his health concerns.

He also suggested that voters deserved a candidate capable of dedicating their full attention to the race.

“Our District deserves a representative who can give 100 percent of their energy to this race. Right now, I must focus on healing so that I can continue to serve our community in other ways in the future.”

Despite the announcement, Armstrong remained on the November ballot, allowing voters to support him even though he was no longer actively pursuing the office.

And in a result that underscored the difficult election environment facing Republicans, he won anyway.

Armstrong received 4,602 votes, while Jones finished with 3,737, giving the Democrat an 865-vote advantage.

The victory was especially notable because Republicans held a voter registration advantage in the district heading into the election.

Iowa’s 20th House District includes portions of Council Bluffs and Carter Lake in Pottawattamie County, an area with a significant Republican presence.

Jones, a former police lieutenant and Pottawattamie County supervisor, had hoped to capture the seat for the GOP.

However, voters ultimately selected Armstrong despite his public announcement that he could no longer continue campaigning.

The seat was previously held by Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek, who opted to pursue a U.S. Senate seat rather than seek reelection to the Iowa House.

Armstrong’s victory therefore keeps the district in Democratic hands rather than flipping a Republican-held seat.

Still, the circumstances surrounding his election quickly attracted national attention.

Conservative commentator Collin Rugg highlighted the results Wednesday, pointing to the unusual situation in which a candidate who had effectively withdrawn from the campaign defeated his Republican challenger.

The result came as Republicans across the country struggled in competitive races following Tuesday’s midterm elections.

For Armstrong, however, winning the election does not mean the personal difficulties that prompted him to suspend his campaign have disappeared.

Speaking after his victory, the Democrat acknowledged that he continues to face health challenges that could complicate his responsibilities as a state lawmaker.

“I’m going to do my best to represent…. But I still have health issues; that’s what I’m struggling with,” Armstrong said, according to The New York Times.

His remarks leave questions about how he plans to balance the demands of serving in the Iowa Legislature with his ongoing recovery.

Unlike a congressional race, the contest determined representation in the Iowa House of Representatives, where lawmakers are responsible for considering state legislation, approving budgets and addressing issues affecting local communities.

Armstrong will now be expected to fulfill those responsibilities after previously telling supporters that his health required him to step away from the campaign.

His victory also illustrates how an election can produce an unexpected outcome even when one candidate has stopped actively seeking votes.

Jones remained in the race through Election Day, but the Republican was unable to overcome Armstrong’s support among voters.

The Democrat’s victory preserves his party’s hold on Iowa House District 20 and adds another unusual result to an election night marked by Republican setbacks.

After announcing in September that he could no longer campaign, Armstrong is now preparing to take office following a victory by more than 10 percentage points.
