President Donald Trump said he does not know for sure whether Vice President JD Vance will run for president in 2028, mere hours after Vance posted a lengthy social media post distancing himself from the Iran war.

Trump told reporters he spoke with Vance after Democrats flipped the House and Senate during the midterm elections on Tuesday.

“I speak to him about a lot of things, but I mean, we’ll see what happens. … You don’t know who’s talking about running,” Trump said while speaking from the White House ballroom construction site.

“You can have people running,” Trump continued. “You can have a lot of people. Maybe or a lot of people are running. Maybe nobody’s going to run. Maybe he won’t run. I don’t know who’s going to run.”

Vance’s social media post Wednesday was the first instance of him creating daylight with the administration’s policies, particularly the unpopular Iran war, in the wake of the midterm elections. High gas and diesel prices were top issues for voters across the nation. Polls showed Democrats would at least win the House on Tuesday. In the aftermath of the elections, Democrats won Senate seats in historically red states including Kansas and Texas. Democrats are poised to win at least 54 seats in the Senate and at least 234 House seats.

But with such a heavy loss, Vance may not have the primary field to himself in 2028. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who had already begun challenging Vance’s inevitability before the election, seems poised to run for president.

Early Wednesday morning, Vance posted on X that the “reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.”

But Trump appeared to have no regrets about the war in his first appearance since the elections.

“I can tell you that as far as that war is concerned, I would have done nothing different,” Trump said. “We’ve totally broken their military. Their navy’s gone. Their air force is gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone.”

Although Trump did concede that he thought Vance’s comments were correct.

“I think it’s largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit, short term, and probably that’s probably it’s true,” he also said. “But at the same time, if I had it to do again, I’d have to do it again because long term, it’s the only answer. You can’t let Iran have a nuclear.”
