President Donald Trump would not say if he will endorse Vice President JD Vance for the presidency in 2028, telling reporters Tuesday that the two men have never discussed the topic.

“He’s a very talented person and he’s a very good person, but we’ve literally — I don’t think we’ve ever talked about it,” Trump answered Tuesday in the Oval Office when asked about Vance’s recent comments that if he ran, the president would back him.

Vance is widely viewed as the heir-apparent to the president’s MAGA mandate, and he’s been pulling double duty during the 2026 midterm cycle, serving as the Republican National Committee’s finance chair and top surrogate. But Vance has steadfastly avoided publicly discussing the possibility of running in 2028. He previously told the Washington Examiner that he would wait until after the midterm elections before even contemplating a bid.

Earlier this week, Vance told Mark Halperin during an interview that he had yet to make a decision on running in 2028.

“I really have not made up my mind about what to do in 2028. I just haven’t focused on it,” the vice president said. “You and I have talked about that. Look, I think if I run, the president will endorse me, sure.”

Vance said during the interview that he hadn’t broached the topic with Trump and was focused on helping Republicans win the midterm elections.

“We are very early right now,” said the president. “We have to get through the midterms. We’ll see how it goes. I’m going to a rally in North Carolina. We had an amazing rally last night, Kansas, for a tremendous person.”
