Descendants of the Blackfeet chief who inspired the NFL team Washington Redskins are urging President Donald Trump to restore the name and image of their ancestor.

“We want the name and logo restored with our family’s direct participation and blessing, and the new stadium named the John Two Guns White Calf Memorial Stadium — the first NFL stadium ever named for a Native American,” Morningstar Gopher, the press and media relations for the Estate of Chief Two Guns White Calf told the Washington Examiner.

Gopher said her family is seeking to change “invisibility,” explaining that they were not consulted when the name changed in 2020, following pressure that it was racist toward Native Americans.

The Redskins played as the Washington Football Team for two seasons before changing the team name to the Washington Commanders in 2022.

Gopher also called out former Washington Redskins and Commanders Owner Dan Snyder.

“It happened while Dan Snyder was going through a professional crisis, and that moment was used,” Gopher told the Washington Examiner.

Trump criticized the team for changing its name and has pushed for the Redskin’s return.

Reporters asked Trump about another team name change in July 2025.

“Oh, I love that. I love the sound of that,” Trump said to reporters when asked about another possible name change then. “I’d do the Washington Redskins. I think they should do it. I told the mayor, and I told people that they should bring back the name. If they bring back the name, you’ll have a lot of excitement.”

“The Redskins logo, for our family, was never meant to cause harm,” Gopher told the Washington Examiner. “It was a sense of pride. We want our own people to see that.”

Gopher said the family of John Two Guns White Calf requested a meeting with the president to discuss a proposal to restore the name and image of the former chief, according to a press release on LinkedIn dated Oct. 12.

Chief Two Guns White Calf’s “image is what made the Redskins brand such an iconic image among all Americans,” Gopher told the Washington Examiner. “It didn’t matter if you hated the logo or loved it, you knew who it was and what brand it was associated with.”

Gopher said her family and their nonprofit group, Nationz2Nations, are hosting a cultural showcase in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 20 to give the public a chance to talk to them and hear their story.

As part of the showcase, a “direct meeting with the franchise leadership” will be held to discuss the restoration of the chief’s image, according to event details.
