President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Justice to investigate Democrats, including Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), for allegedly threatening to impeach or otherwise punish administration officials and Republican donors.
“The Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment, even though they admit they have no reason to do so, and there have been no impeachable acts committed, or even thought of, by the victims of this illegal process,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Saturday afternoon.
“This is extortion at the highest level, and they should be held accountable for this,” he declared.
After bemoaning the Democratic Party’s “weaponization and lawfare,” the president specifically called out Slotkin for suggesting future investigations into the administration should deter young conservatives who want to work for the executive branch. Her initial comment drew widespread backlash from Republicans and even led to a formal Senate ethics complaint last month.
Trump previously said Slotkin should be tried in court for seemingly threatening to target young Republicans, but he is now ramping up the pressure against the Michigan Democrat.
“The imprisonment should be against these EXTORTIONISTS, and Republicans should get smart, fast!” Trump said. “Threatening letters have been sent to many people, all innocent, from Democrat Political Leaders. By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!”
In a subsequent post, the president said Democrats who threaten “innocent Republican Donors and Party Members” with extortion should be reported to the DOJ or himself immediately.
“These SLEAZEBAGS should go to jail for what they are doing,” he wrote. “The Senate must act, and stop being pushed around to the point of the Republican Party losing Elections, and worse! Likewise, the DOJ and House of Representatives.”
The social media posts came four days after the midterm elections, in which Democrats retook both chambers of Congress. Trump has been simultaneously lashing out at Democrats while vowing to work with them for his last two years in office.
While reeling from the Republican losses, Trump started shaking up his staff at the White House. On Friday, he announced that deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as chief of staff next week.
Slotkin pointed to Miller’s promotion as an example of how Trump is doubling down on the “policies that brought him the loss in the first place.” She also suggested Miller helped draft the Truth Social post that Trump made about her.
“Mr. President, your threats of legal action and worse didn’t work when you tried to criminally indict me in front of a grand jury last February,” Slotkin posted on X. “Or when you threatened it again last month. If anything, your hair-trigger obsession on the issue of corruption and illegal orders reveals more about you [than] it does about me.”
DOJ URGED TO INVESTIGATE SLOTKIN OVER THREATS TO YOUNG PROFESSIONALS SEEKING WORK IN TRUMP ADMINISTRATION
On Saturday, Slotkin made an appearance at Crooked Con in Washington, D.C., where she declined to rule out a run for a Senate leadership position. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is expected to become the majority leader next year unless some other Democrat beats him in the leadership elections. Schumer is running uncontested so far.
Slotkin left the door open to supporting Schumer, but she noted that Senate Democrats “need a new generation of leadership.” Schumer has led the caucus since January 2017, coinciding with the start of Trump’s first term.
