President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will meet with executives of top AI companies at the White House on Tuesday, the Washington Examiner confirmed.
The expected meeting underscores the pressure Republicans are under to regulate the industry ahead of the November midterm elections. Johnson has rejected calls to act quickly on regulating AI models, saying the House will not take “stupid knee-jerk reaction prescriptions” toward the industry.
A White House official confirmed the meeting will take place on Sept. 29, but did not say who else would attend. Johnson has repeatedly said he wants Trump and tech CEOs to “go in a big room, close the door” and sort out the federal government’s role, if any, in regulating AI models.
Several tech CEOs were at the White House on Thursday night for a state dinner in honor of Chinese President Xi Jinping, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
Trump and top Republicans have argued that placing too many regulations on artificial intelligence risks hampering the U.S.’s national security and giving China an opening to take the lead in the AI development race.
“We cannot have a moratorium on the development of AI, OK, because then we will lose our edge to China, and that has serious national security implications for every American family,” Johnson told reporters last week. “So there’s a balance here, and we’re going to have steady hands at the wheel on this as we do everything else.”
Still, proponents of regulation have rung alarm bells over the rapid growth of AI models, with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei writing an open letter earlier this month calling for an international slowdown on AI frontier model development. The letter came after former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned and warned that AI could “kill us all by the end of the decade” and that Anthropic and OpenAI are “gambling with our lives.”

Trump has moved to rebrand artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence” as he bats down calls for regulation, and said in a Truth Social post Friday that he had a “Very productive meeting with President Xi for both the U.S.A. and China.”
“Tremendous things will be happening,” Trump wrote. “Like almost everyone else, he seemed to like calling the poorly and inaccurately named Artificial Intelligence to a far more accurate and important name, SUPER INTELLIGENCE. That would be “SUPER!” Everyone last night agreed, also.”
