EXCLUSIVE — The federal government is tracking efforts by left-wing activists to hide their connections to the newly-designated terrorist group Palestine Action, a senior State Department official told the Washington Examiner.
The official said Palestine Action, which is originally from the United Kingdom, appears to operate under “basically what is an alias,” a common tactic used by other sanctioned groups. The U.K. and the United States banned providing support to Palestine Action in July 2025 and last August, respectively, but a so-called global affiliate of the group later emerged to organize its same style of property damage attacks, a prior Washington Examiner investigation found.
The State Department was aware of the change shortly after it occurred, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly.
“I can tell you that we have been monitoring this,” the person said, without confirming any future action.

“Palestine Action Global” is now soliciting funds, publicly taking credit for specific crimes in Europe and the U.S., and advertising virtual trainings on how to join in attacking businesses or facilities accused of aiding Israel. The Palestine Action Global website was tied to the original U.K. group but later wiped of the evidence to appear separate, the Washington Examiner found.
Palestine Action supporters also made their presence known in the U.S. on Oct. 19 by vandalizing a Manhattan bank with the words “Pal Action,” breaking windows, and publicly bragging about the incident on the group’s behalf.
Seasoned national security officials see the organizational swap as a classic survival strategy by extremist networks throughout the Global War on Terror, the State Department employee said, adding, “It’s not our first rodeo.”
Palestine Action did not respond to a request for comment. “Palestine Action Global, which doesn’t include Palestine Action in the United Kingdom, is not proscribed by the British government or any international government,” the new website claimed in March.
‘We will have additional actions’
Extremism experts previously warned that the Treasury Department’s August designations of Palestine Action and the pro-Palestinian leftist group Masar Badil may not hinder affiliated groups, including in the U.S., without further action. The department’s “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” designations restrict U.S.-based individuals or entities from receiving services or engaging in transactions with the designated organizations.
Officials determined Masar Badil to be an extension of an already-sanctioned funding network for Marxist Palestinian terrorists. It has an ally at the University of Washington: Students United for Palestinian Equality and Return UW, which openly associates itself with Masar Badil’s youth branch on social media and collaborates with the group on political events.
SUPER UW famously led a May 2025 riot at the campus in which participants broke into a building, lit a dumpster ablaze, blocked entrances, obstructed police, and declared “death” to the officers.
As far as U.S. activists who flout sanctions, “we do have counterparts on the other side in the domestic front that will be looking at those,” the State Department official said when asked about SUPER UW.
County prosecutors charged 33 people in the 2025 riot but gave numerous lenient diversion agreements, prompting UW to celebrate the cases as another “win.” SUPER UW did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
The third foreign group hit by the August sanctions, leftist tech collective Autistici Inventati, said it was shutting down under the financial and legal strain. Supporters encouraged getting around the crackdown by recreating Autistici Inventati’s tools, which provided digital anonymity for activists linked to crimes.
In addition to using preexisting counterterrorism tools, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is pursuing alliances with other countries against the violent far Left, a threat he argues has been downplayed through the years. Rubio’s team hosted a law enforcement workshop on the issue in May with 14 countries and a July ministerial on “political terrorism” with 67 of them.
‘PALESTINE ACTION’ GROUP PROMOTES VIOLENT ATTACKS IN US AND CLAIMS TERRORISM SANCTIONS CAN’T STOP IT
The State Department has “more to come” in its campaign against left-wing terrorism, the official told the Washington Examiner.
“We will have additional actions,” the official said.
