Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) beat back a spirited challenge by former state Assemblyman Mike LiPetri in New York’s 3rd Congressional District on Tuesday.
The Associated Press called the race for Suozzi at 2:04 p.m. on Wednesday. He garnered 55% against LiPetri’s 45%, with 97% of the vote counted.
The race was seen as crucial for both Democrats and Republicans in the race for the House majority, but became less important as Democrats romped to victory Tuesday night. Suozzi is the only New York Democrat to represent a seat that President Donald Trump carried in 2024.
Republicans were optimistic about flipping the district given that LiPetri came within 13,000 votes of unseating Suozzi in 2024. There were also GOP hopes that a strong performance in Nassau County by Republican gubernatorial nominee Bruce Blakeman would be enough to dislodge Suozzi, but GOP underperformance nationally undercut those hopes. Blakeman currently serves as Nassau County executive.
