Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned about left-wing terrorism threatening Western Civilization. Now, Europe is seeing what these groups are capable of.
“Antifa militants and their comrades travel from across Europe and to the Americas to participate in each other’s attacks, to funnel propaganda and training, materials, and target information through shared encrypted channels—moving through underground networks of safe houses, and finance and sustain their operations through transnational funds,” Rubio warned in July.
On Monday, the Louvre in Paris had to be shut down due to protesters barricading the entrances. This followed a weekend of violent riots that caused damage to government buildings and thousands of businesses and led to nearly 2,400 arrests across France. Almost 1,000 police officers and gendarmes were injured during the violence on Saturday, and at least 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted over the weekend.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu blamed far-left groups for causing “profound unrest in the country in the run-up to the presidential election,” Reuters reported.
“The violence unfolding in France underscores the threat Secretary Rubio warned about at the Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism: political violence and extremist networks pose a growing threat to public safety and stability,” a State Department official told the Daily Signal on Tuesday. “Governments must take seriously the consequences of failing to secure their borders and enforce their immigration laws, particularly when it comes to identifying and addressing security threats.”
In November 2025, the State Department designated four European far-left groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. These include Antifa Ost, the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front, Armed Proletarian Justice, and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense.
When the riots began, they were led by students protesting the conditions in schools. They have broadened into a wider revolt against the cost of living, dissatisfaction with the government, and cuts to public spending.
President Donald Trump said the violence in France will spread to America if Republicans lose the upcoming midterm election.
“If you want to see what is at stake in this election, just look at what’s happening in France, a once great nation that is being conquered, looted, and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists, and communists who hate Christianity and they hate, frankly, the Western civilization itself,” he said Monday at a rally in Kansas.
Trump has said that the unrest is an “immigration problem.”
“They’re losing Europe. That’s never happening to the United States of America,” he said. “The people that came in do not love France or these other countries under attack. They don’t love the people. They don’t love the art. They don’t love the architecture of the buildings. They don’t love anything that surrounds them.”
Vice President JD Vance said Monday he warned French President Emmanuel Macron to close the borders to prevent the current unrest, but Macron didn’t listen.
“I told him a long time ago, you’re making a big mistake in France. You’re letting everybody from the world come in. The whole world was coming in, and you know, as you know, Paris is going to be a Muslim city very soon, and that wasn’t the deal,” he told reporters during his travels to North Carolina for a campaign rally. “That wasn’t the deal. I told Emmanuel, you should close up your borders, and let’s see. I’ve known him for probably eight or nine years. I told him as soon as I met him. I said, ‘You’re making a big mistake.’ We closed our borders. He didn’t.”
