BUFORD, Georgia–Canvassers from Americans for Prosperity (AFP) traveled from house-to-house Tuesday in support of Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson.

The effort comes as part of a broader mission to ensure former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is not re-elected to public service.

Tony West, senior advisor for Americans for Prosperity State PAC, told the Daily Signal that the organization endorsed Jackson because “a lot of what he [Jackson] has led with happens to be things that AFP has worked on in Georgia for several years.”

“He’s continued to talk about reducing the cost of living when it comes to taxation.”

West continued, “He’s set a goal to cut our state income tax in half by the end of his first term.”

Cutting red tape is another area where Americans for Prosperity supports Jackson, West said. “He’s talked about setting up an Office of Deregulation to look at our regulatory structure, and to ask questions that all governments should be asking, which is, ‘Is this regulation completely necessary?’”

Georgia voters in Buford had something to say about Jackson as well. “I’m voting for Rick ’cause I’m a Republican,” said Greg, a Buford resident. He also spoke on the importance of getting the vote out in a timely manner, adding, “I always early vote.”

April of Buford seemed to echo Greg’s viewpoint, saying, “We’re Republican, so we’ll be voting for him.”

Subal, another Buford resident, talked to canvassers outside in his garden, and gave a thumbs up for Jackson. When the discussion turned to the successes of Gov. Brian Kemp, he seemed to agree.

Yet another Buford voter, Addison, hasn’t “gotten a chance to [vote] yet,” but “think” he’s “there [in support of Jackson].”

Christopher hasn’t cast an early ballot yet either but says he’s has made a plan to vote in support of Jackson.

While these locals backed Jackson, there were others, who, while they still planned to vote for him, expressed their frustration and displeasure with government. It can always “be worse,” noted Richard.

At all the doors AFP knocked on, residents either supported Jackson or declined to comment.

Ultimately, it all comes down to voters, said West. “You have to energize them and get them excited and help them see how steady, conservative leadership in the governor’s mansion is very vital to the success of Georgia, and we can’t sit this election out.”

Early voting is already underway, with Election Day approaching soon on Nov. 3.
