U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.
It’s just one of the many scandals now enveloping Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a.k.a. U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.
Her financial disclosures which exploded from about $100,000 to $30 million in a year, then plunged back down just as fast, and her purported “marriage” to a brother are others.
But something as basic as the year she claims she was born has the potential to send shock waves across her career, her campaign, and even her party. Congressional actions taken by one vote could be challenged, Fraud charges could emanate from documents she signed.
The basics are that she now claims her birth year was 1982, which would have made her 17, a juvenile, when her father apparently obtained citizenship, and would be a citizen.
But it’s documented that after she joined Congress she gave orders to a number of nonpolitical resources to change her birth year from 1981, a date under which she would have been technically 18 and an adult, and ineligible for citizenship under her father’s application. Those resources didn’t see any documentation, they just changed the date because that’s what she said.
She apparently never filed a citizenship application on her own.
Government investigators two weeks ago raided her home as part of their review of the facts in her case, and her claims about them. And the court document charged that her name is “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi,” and she also is known as “Ilhan Omar.”
But some of the evidence likely to appear in a potential case against her would be her own words and claims about her age.
A report at the Federalist was headlined, “Either Ilhan Omar Lied About Her Age In Her Autobiography, Or She’s Lying Now.”
It cites her own autobiography where she states, “I was eight years old when civil war broke out in Somalia. One day everything was okay, and the next, there were bullets piercing not only buildings but also people,” she wrote of the war that broke out in 1989.
“The claim that she was 8 in 1989 points to a birth year of 1981, meaning she was 18 or 19 in 2000 at the time of her naturalization,” the report said.
In another part of her book, “Elmi once again made claims that would give her a 1981 birth year, as opposed to 1982. During a three-month trip back to Somalia in 2011, Elmi said, ‘I was thirty years old.'”
Further, there was a 2019 Atlantic article which said Elmi was “all of two months old when the December 1981 massacre took place” in El Salvador.
And, “A 2019 BBC profile also said she was born ‘the youngest of seven siblings in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu in 1981.'”
The report added a citation to a 2019 profile in Le Temps stating she was born in 1981. And Dawn, a Pakistani publication, “said she was 37 in November 2018, meaning she turned 19 in 2000, and that she was born in 1981.”
Elmi was in the Minnesota legislature before going to Congress and that record states she was born in 1982, but that was changed from 1981 in 2019.
“The Library of Congress lists her birthday as Oct. 4, 1981, but her congressional biography says it’s the same day in 1982,” the Federalist said.
WND has reported already that at least one member of Congress will try to have her expelled from Congress if she’s found guilty of immigration fraud.
And President Donald Trump has weighed in:
Elmi has blamed President Trump for the allegations and search for evidence.
