The United States is taking steps that could dramatically reshape the military situation in the Middle East, with American forces repositioning equipment, strengthening regional defenses, and preparing for the possibility of another confrontation with Iran.
The developments come as President Donald Trump weighs his next move against Tehran, with diplomatic negotiations struggling to produce a breakthrough and military planners examining options for renewed operations. The administration has maintained that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains a central objective of its regional strategy.
According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Washington has warned several Gulf Arab nations to prepare for a potentially brief but intense military campaign following the November 3 midterm elections. The warnings, delivered through diplomatic and military channels, suggest the United States and Israel could soon resume major combat operations against the Iranian regime.
American military preparations are already underway. The Pentagon is transferring an additional Patriot missile defense system from Texas to Israel, while relocating troops from vulnerable positions at bases throughout the Middle East. U.S. forces are also replenishing ammunition supplies and preparing bombers and fighter aircraft for potential strikes.
An additional aircraft carrier strike group and Marine expeditionary unit are expected to deploy to the region next month, joining approximately 20 American warships already operating in Middle Eastern waters. Some existing vessels could rotate out as reinforcements arrive.
Despite the buildup, Trump has not authorized a new offensive. Sources familiar with his thinking told the Journal that the president is leaning toward a substantial post-election operation targeting Iranian infrastructure and nuclear facilities, although a negotiated agreement remains possible.
The White House declined to discuss specific operational preparations.
“President Trump keeps all options on the table to ensure that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the administration said.
Speaking at a rally last week, Trump also raised the possibility of another round of military action.
“We may do another little Epic Fury,” Trump said, referencing the American-Israeli bombing campaign earlier this year. “Or they’ll agree.”
The latest developments follow months of economic pressure against Tehran, including tightened sanctions and an American naval blockade that has severely restricted Iranian oil exports and international trade.
Israel has reportedly developed its own plans for renewed strikes, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supporting additional military action aimed at weakening Iran’s military capabilities.
However, another offensive could trigger significant retaliation. Iranian officials have threatened attacks against economic infrastructure and civilian targets across the region if the United States resumes large-scale bombing operations. Tehran also retains substantial missile capabilities despite extensive damage from previous American and Israeli strikes.
The nuclear situation remains particularly uncertain. International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said Tuesday that inspectors had found no indication Iran was rebuilding nuclear facilities damaged during the 2025 and 2026 attacks. However, limited access has prevented the agency from verifying the status of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
Trump has indicated that military action will not resume before the midterm elections, leaving the administration with a narrowing window to pursue diplomacy before potentially escalating the conflict.
For now, American officials insist the military preparations are designed to preserve the president’s options rather than signal an irreversible decision to launch another attack.
