President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for legal and political consequences for Democratic Party Senate candidate Mary Peltola following a bombshell New York Times report on efforts linked to her campaign involving a second candidate named Dan J. Sullivan — who shares the same name as incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan — in Alaska’s U.S. Senate race.
“It has just been determined that the Democrats in Alaska illegally searched for, and recruited, a man named Dan Sullivan to run against our distinguished Republican Senator, Dan Sullivan, in order to defraud, confuse, and obfuscate the Election, thereby taking votes away from the REAL Senator, Dan Sullivan,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
He went on to quote a segment of the report, which reads, “Democrats have insisted they have nothing to do with the other Dan Sullivan on Alaska’s Senate ballot. But aides with the Mary Peltola campaign and DSCC were part of a monthslong secret plan to recruit him to run — as well as other candidates.”
Trump then called for individuals involved in the scheme, including Peltola herself, to face legal consequences. “The Democrats’ false statements were made under oath in Federal Court. Therefore, they perjured themselves, and should be liable for very serious consequences. Mary Peltola should suffer the Legal and Political consequences for what she has done, A FRAUD ON THE AMERICAN PUBLIC, and Dan Sullivan should be allowed to run without either Mary Peltola or FAKE Dan Sullivan on the Ballot.”
In a subsequent post, he added, “In Alaska, I don’t think Mary Peltola, after perpetrating such a terrible scheme, should be allowed to run, because this is ELECTION FRAUD. The Democrats cheated! They found a man named Dan Sullivan, put him on the Ballot, then lied to the Court, and said they didn’t know anything about it. That’s perjury. She shouldn’t be allowed to run, and neither should the FAKE Dan Sullivan!”

The president’s comments were made in response to a bombshell report from the New York Times, which stated that in the summer of 2025 a Peltola campaign staffer received instructions from top aides to search Alaska voter records for people named Dan Sullivan. The staffer then produced a list of suitable Alaska residents.
The effort, which some accounts described as a “ballot composition project,” involved aides connected to the Peltola campaign, lawyers, and senior staff at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, according to The Times. It cited interviews with 12 people, text messages, and documents prepared for a potential lawsuit.
The reporting identified the recruitment of Daniel J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from Petersburg, a small fishing community in southeastern Alaska reachable primarily by air or sea. He filed to run in May 2026, changed his registration to Republican shortly beforehand, and advanced from the top-four primary.
Former Peltola campaign manager Elisa Rios told the Times that Peltola was not directly involved in the project but was “definitely aware.” Rios later sought to retract her statements, though the outlet noted that her account aligned with other sources and materials
Democratic operative Jerid Kurtz, described in reporting as involved in ballot-related efforts, was said to have traveled in Alaska under an assumed name and contacted potential candidates, including Sullivan. Kurtz reported that Sullivan indicated willingness to run if it would help Peltola, according to accounts in the Times.
The effort also included recruitment of other candidates, among them Gerald Heikes, who is on the general election ballot alongside Peltola, Senator Dan S. Sullivan, and Daniel J. Sullivan.
Peltola’s campaign has stated it had no involvement with either Sullivan candidacy and did not recruit candidates. The DSCC has denied involvement with Daniel J. Sullivan, while Daniel J. Sullivan has maintained that he entered the race independently.
The Department of Justice had previously issued grand jury subpoenas in connection with the matter. NBC News reported in August that federal investigators in Alaska were examining whether Daniel J. Sullivan’s candidacy was intended to confuse voters, and that a grand jury had issued subpoenas.
Separately, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit last week in federal court in Alaska seeking to prevent certification of the Senate election results if votes cast for Daniel J. Sullivan affect the outcome in a way that would reverse a loss by Sen. Dan S. Sullivan, pending an investigation into potential voter confusion.
