In the latest escalation of the ongoing trade war with Canada, President Trump is moving to ban a major Canadian airplane manufacturer from doing business in the U.S.
On Monday, President Trump declared on Truth Social that Canada’s Bombardier company will no longer be permitted to sell its jets in the United States —
unless they are built here.

NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough! Over 50% of their revenue comes from the United States — They live off American Buyers, American Companies, American Airports, and American Service — All while Canada blocks our GREAT American Banks, and Companies, throughout the U.S.A. They even blocked Gulfstream Aerospace from doing business in Canada — Completely unjust and unfair! That Era is OVER! If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a “piggybank.” BUY AMERICAN. FLY ON AMERICAN AIRLINERS. ENJOY AMERICAN LIQUOR AND BEVERAGES. SAIL ON LAKE AMERICA. AMERICA FIRST! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP
President Trump’s announcement comes as retaliatory tariffs from Canada against the U.S. are set to go into effect on Tuesday.
NBC News provided some background on the trade spat with Canada:
Trump’s clash with the company comes amid a trade war in which the president has imposed new tariffs on Canadian products and signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America.
Canada responded to Trump’s tariffs by announcing retaliatory tariffs on nearly $20 billion worth of goods. Those tariffs are expected to take effect Tuesday.
Bombardier responded to President Trump’s threat by noting that they already employ some Americans and wish to grow their facilities in the U.S.
CNBC shared a statement from Bombardier:
Bombardier in statement to CNBC said that its workers are based all over the U.S., with direct employment in more than 20 states and sites in 10 states, including California, Texas and Arizona.
The company also added that its aircraft are built with American-made components such as engines, avionics and many more key systems provided by American companies.
It also has plans to grow its defense activities and its service network in the country, as well as inaugurate a new facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana later this year.
“Bombardier values its great partnership with American companies and its U.S. employees,” it said.
Republican Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas, where Bombardier already has a large presence, also wrote on X:
The presence of Bombardier in Wichita supports a local workforce of more than a thousand employees, who contribute their talent and expertise to our nation’s defense and aerospace capabilities.

The presence of Bombardier in Wichita supports a local workforce of more than a thousand employees, who contribute their talent and expertise to our nation’s defense and aerospace capabilities.
This afternoon, I reached out to the Trump administration to make certain the President is aware of the significant contributions of Bombardier to Kansas and the importance of its presence in Wichita to many Kansas workers at Bombardier and in the Bombardier supply chain.
I will continue working to see that Bombardier’s manufacturing operations not only remain in Kansas but continue to grow and create American jobs. Kansas is home to a hardworking, skilled workforce, and I will continue welcoming leaders in aircraft and defense manufacturing to do business here in the Air Capital of the World.
What do you think?
Should Canadian companies like Bombardier be forced to either manufacture their products in the United States or not do business here at all?
