Federal authorities raided a California mansion belonging to billionaire Stephen Cloobeck in connection with an investigation into former Congressman Eric Swalwell.

According to Fox News, law enforcement searched the property for several hours Tuesday morning.

Several people taken out of the house in handcuffs were released soon after.

“Cloobeck was not at the residence at the time of the raid,” Fox News noted.

“The search comes after the FBI searched Swalwell’s Washington, D.C., home in August and seized his electronic devices at San Francisco International Airport. Swalwell resigned from Congress and dropped his California gubernatorial bid following multiple sexual misconduct allegations, including accusations from a former staffer,” Fox News wrote.

“The latest raid follows another development involving newly declassified FBI records about Swalwell’s relationship with a suspected Chinese intelligence operative,” it added.

Fox News shared further:

Cloobeck was arrested earlier this year in an unrelated case, in which he faced charges of attempting to influence witnesses in a criminal case against his fiancée.

At least five women, including one former staffer, have accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct or rape.

Swalwell also faced renewed scrutiny earlier this week after the White House declassified documents related to an FBI probe into his relationship with Christine “Fang Fang” Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. Swalwell told FBI agents he had “physical relations” with Fang on a handful of occasions, according to declassified FBI records released Monday by the White House.

Their last sexual encounter occurred in March 2015, according to Swalwell’s account in the FBI records.

The documents were released by the White House’s new Government Transparency Task Force.

According to the New York Post, Cloobeck backed Swalwell’s run for governor and let the former congressman stay at his mansion.

Cloobeck reportedly withdrew his support for Swalwell once the sexual assault allegations surfaced.

“I am no longer associated with a man that takes advantage of women,” Cloobeck said, according to the New York Post.

“I support women’s rights,” he added.

More from the New York Post:

Cloobeck was one of Swalwell’s largest benefactors, spending over $1 million to support Swalwell’s California gubernatorial campaign, giving the maximum $39,200 direct contribution, and providing a private $31,000 trip to France in 2024.

Swalwell frequently lived and stayed out of Cloobeck’s Beverly Hills mansion, even filming a video response to misconduct allegations from inside the home.

Cloobeck himself ran for governor before dropping out to make way for Swalwell.

The benefactor has had troubles of his own. He was about to marry a “Penthouse Pet” accused of stealing from rich sugar daddies before calling it off.

Cloobeck was charged with three felony counts of attempting to dissuade or prevent a witness or victim from testifying, and one misdemeanor count of making annoying phone calls. All charges stem from his ex-partner Adva Lavie’s criminal case in which she’s accused of using dating apps to steal from rich older men.
