A man is in “serious but stable condition” after being shot in Austin, Texas, on Sunday afternoon in an incident that involved an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, according to local officials.
“At approximately 12:56 in the afternoon today, the Austin-Travis County EMS received a notification from the Austin Police Department of a reported shooting at the 8000 block of Anderson Square,” Chief of the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services Robert Luckritz said at an initial press conference with other city officials. “EMS responded immediately and was on scene within three and a half minutes. One individual was identified as suffering from a gunshot wound. The patient was stable, vital signs were stable, but in serious condition. They were transported off the scene within 9 minutes of arrival of EMS resources and transported to a local trauma center.” He later noted the man was shot in the torso.
Mayor Kirk Watson said “there are a lot of things that we don’t know,” in his opening comments, but that the Austin Police Department was not involved in the incident. He said he hopes law enforcement agencies other than ICE, including APD, will be involved in the investigation into the incident.
The man who was shot is an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who had a final order of removal, Department of Homeland Security sources said after the press conference occurred, according to Fox News. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), who initially urged Texans to “let the facts come out” after the news broke, criticized Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) for participating in the press conference and referring to ICE’s presence in the city as a “war.”
“As mayor of the city of Austin, I am very angry about this,” Watson said after his opening remarks. “I am extremely unhappy. A person being shot on the streets of Austin by someone purporting to be law enforcement, particularly when it’s ICE, is something that causes me to be unhappy and angry about it. And while I’m unhappy and angry about it, I’m not surprised at all — it’s happened in other cities.”

Casar, who represents portions of Austin, was also attacked by the White House for being “best known for staging ridiculously dramatic photo ops alongside his Radical Left lunatic friends.”
Two individuals were shot by ICE officers in separate incidents in Maine and Houston in July. The Trump administration’s strict enforcement of immigration law initially drew backlash in January when two anti-ICE protesters were fatally shot in Minneapolis.
