Former Vice President Kamala Harris advised Democrats against impeaching President Donald Trump if they retake the House of Representatives.
Democrats are widely expected to retake the upper chamber in next week’s midterm elections, which Republicans have narrowly controlled since 2023. During his first term, Trump was impeached twice by the Democratic-controlled House after he withheld congressionally authorized aid to Ukraine in 2019, and after he attempted to overturn the 2020 election. In each case, the Senate failed to muster the two-thirds necessary to convict him.
On Tuesday, Harris spoke with Aaron Parnas of MeidasTouch, who asked whether Democrats should seek to investigate and potentially impeach Trump if they win the House and the Senate. When asked if Democrats should pursue investigations and impeachments, Harris, who lost to Trump in 2024, said Democrats should refrain from impeaching the president, but should investigate him.
“What would your recommendation be to leadership in Congress?” Parnas asked. “Would it be to go the investigations route and potentially an impeachment one day? Or would it be [to] go pass policy and force the president to veto it?”
“I think that going in the direction of impeachment is not a good idea, just to be honest with you,” she replied. “Just because we have limited resources and I think the energy and the resources need to be put into accountability, need to be put into investigations. And that’s where the time should be spent.”
