Country singer Kacey Musgraves torched former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem over her decision to kill her family hunting dog after Noem criticized the artist for posing with Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico.
“I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it,” Musgraves said on X, referring to Noem’s past decision to put down her 14-month-old puppy, which made national headlines.
The exchange began Sunday when Talarico posted a picture on X of him at a Musgraves concert.
“Thank you for having me last night, @KaceyMusgraves!” he said.
On Monday, Noem posted Talarico’s response and pictures on X.
“I’ll take [Ella Langley] over Kacey Musgraves any day,” Noem said. “And if I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico.”
Paxton is the Texas Republican Senate nominee, whom President Donald Trump endorsed in May.
Noem hinted at country superstar Ella Langley’s smash hit “Choosin’ Texas,” which made history on the Billboard Hot 100 after spending 23 weeks at the No. 1 spot, knocking out Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
Musgraves clapped back at Noem’s post later that day, bashing Noem for putting down her dog.
Noem told the story of putting down her dog in her book, No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward. She told the story of Cricket, the family puppy, who she said she killed to be a good neighbor and dog owner after the dog killed another family’s chickens.
Noem said Cricket tried to bite her when she tried to stop the dog.

Talarico also responded on X late Monday, saying, “Don’t mess with Texas.”
Langley has not commented on the online exchange. However, her X handle has been removed from Noem’s post.
