Kimberly Guilfoyle is out as the United States ambassador to Greece.
And President Trump did not hide why he made the call.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Trump said he did not like what he had been reading about Guilfoyle and made clear that her past relationship with Donald Trump Jr. did not put her inside the family or beyond accountability.
“I didn’t like what I read,” the president said.
Eric Daugherty captured Trump’s blunt explanation:
This was not a quiet reshuffling buried in a State Department memo.
The White House asked Guilfoyle to resign after reports raised questions about her conduct before and during her diplomatic posting. She then submitted her resignation Tuesday.
The Associated Press reports that the administration moved after allegations of improper and possibly illegal conduct drew mounting scrutiny. New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced that Guilfoyle had been asked to leave during her first formal briefing and said the administration wished her well.
AP reported that a series of Wall Street Journal stories alleged Guilfoyle threatened a host-country official, accepted improper gifts and services, and offered to use her influence in exchange for payment of a large personal credit-card bill.
Those remain allegations. Guilfoyle has denied wrongdoing, and her attorneys have disputed the reporting.
The outlet also reported that Guilfoyle’s departure followed days of public speculation, a weekend preview that her job was in danger and Trump’s Monday acknowledgment that the administration was already reviewing her future.
But by Monday, Trump was already signaling that her position was in serious danger.
Asked whether he was considering firing her, the president said the administration was looking at the matter and was “not happy.”
One day later, she was gone.
AP confirmed the resignation shortly after the White House announcement:
Guilfoyle had been one of Trump’s most recognizable political allies.
The former prosecutor and television personality was once engaged to Donald Trump Jr. Trump nominated her to serve as ambassador to Greece in December 2024, and the Senate confirmed her in September 2025.
She became the first woman to hold the post and formally presented her credentials in Athens that November.
The assignment put a loyal Trump surrogate at the center of a strategically important relationship as the United States worked with Greece on energy, defense and regional security.
That made the speed and public nature of her exit even more striking.
CBS News reports that businessman and Trump donor Eric Deters alleged Guilfoyle asked him in July 2025 to wire $100,000 to her American Express account before her Senate confirmation hearing. Deters characterized the request as “pay to play” and said he had sought Guilfoyle’s help obtaining access to administration officials.
CBS reported that White House officials were told text messages between Guilfoyle and Deters were authentic. The Wall Street Journal first reported those messages.
Guilfoyle’s lawyers offered a sharply different account.
They said any money she sought from the donor was payment for public appearances and speaking engagements completed before her ambassadorial nomination. They also denied allegations involving private-plane travel and said she followed State Department guidance and travel rules.
Guilfoyle herself rejected the accusations as she announced the end of her tenure.
ProtoThema reports that Guilfoyle called serving as ambassador the honor of a lifetime, thanked Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and said she intended to vigorously defend her name, reputation and integrity.
In her statement, Guilfoyle said she was proud of what the United States and Greece achieved during her tenure and described the relationship between the two countries as stronger than ever. She framed her departure as the end of a chapter, not an admission, and said she would not allow the accusations to define her record of public service.
She also thanked the Greek people for their hospitality and said the experience had permanently shaped her life.
Her complete statement was posted on X:
There is an important distinction here.
Guilfoyle has not been found guilty of a crime, and the accusations against her have not been proved in court. She says they are false and has promised to fight them.
Trump nevertheless decided that the reports themselves had become too serious to ignore.
Political loyalty may open doors in Washington. It does not guarantee that they stay open forever.
Trump’s message Tuesday was unmistakable: he read the reports, he did not like what he saw, and the ambassador was out.
