Top Republican super PACs aligned with GOP leadership and President Donald Trump are withdrawing cash allotted for the races of two vulnerable House incumbents, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The Congressional Leadership Fund, which is aligned with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), and super PACs affiliated with MAGA Inc., Trump’s political organization, are diverting spending from the races of Reps. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) and Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) with only three weeks remaining until Election Day.
The cash withdrawal is a troubling sign for Republicans as the party seeks to stem its losses amid polling that shows it struggling with voters concerned about the rising cost of living amid the Iran war.
“For two years, we’ve built the resources and infrastructure that allow us to maneuver in a difficult environment,” Chris Winkelman, the president of the Congressional Leadership Fund, said in a statement. “These moves keep the pressure on the most vulnerable Democrats and preserve a path to 218 seats.”
The Washington Examiner has reached out to Kean’s and Miller-Meeks’s offices for comment. The New York Times reported the cash retreat.
The triage by CLF also includes abandoning efforts to flip the seats of Rep. Greg Landsman (D-OH) and Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-MI).
