Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) expressed openness toward the idea of abolishing the Electoral College following the Democratic Party’s decisive victory this week in the 2026 midterm elections.

While speaking at the Crooked Con event in Washington, D.C., Shapiro was asked by Pod Save America host Jon Favreau about the possibility of a Democrat-led Congress leading a charge to do away with the constitutional process for electing the president.

“You said in 2020 that the Electoral College should be abolished — you now have a Democratic legislature,” Favreau said. “Would you push to join the National Popular Vote Compact, which, for people who don’t know, would award the participating state’s electoral votes to the national vote winner once enough states join, and, now that, after Tuesday, there are now enough Democratic trifectas to actually get to that point?”

“I think that the national popular vote makes sense, my views on that have not changed,” Shapiro said. “I’ll work with lawmakers to figure out what the right mechanism is for moving forward on that, but, look, we’re the ultimate swing state in Pennsylvania. We’re the biggest swing state. We’re proud of that role we play. I think Pennsylvania can still play a massive role even in a national popular vote. And to me the most important thing is that the will of the people is heard and respected, and I think the popular vote is the way to do that.”

Shapiro has been floated as a 2028 presidential candidate given his executive role as governor of a large Midwestern state and his more centrist views. Socialist and anti-Israel figures have become more mainstream in the Democratic Party, however, since New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was elected in November 2025.

Proposals such as abolishing the Electoral College have been touted largely by socialist figures in recent months ahead of the 2026 elections, though Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Pete Buttigieg, and other candidates supported the idea in 2020, according to Axios.

Alongside abolishing the Electoral College, Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Megan Romer has asserted her party also supports abolishing the Senate, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the United States’s border. Disagreements between centrist Democrats and their socialist peers have already become a key source of tension since the party’s decisive victories earlier in the week.
