Israel’s military destroyed a nearly mile-long stretch of Hamas tunnels in the northern part of Gaza on Tuesday, which coincides with the three-year anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre that ignited the war.
Israeli forces are engaged in an ongoing effort to destroy clear Hamas infrastructure in the parts of Gaza still under its control.
“Forces of the Northern Brigade, under the command of the 99th Division and the engineering forces of the Southern Command, continue to operate to clear the northern Gaza Strip area, east of the Yellow Line, of terror infrastructure,” the Israeli military said in a statement. “During their activity, the Brigade’s forces, in cooperation with the Divisional engineering forces, destroyed an underground route one and a half kilometers long.”
Israeli leaders have warned about a possible terrorism plot to coincide with the three-year anniversary of Hamas’s attack, during which approximately 1,200 people were killed, more wounded, and 250 kidnapped and brought back to Gaza.
The Ministry of Defense said additional precautions have been taken “in light of intelligence regarding Hamas’s intentions to launch attacks against our forces in the area on that day.”
The defense minister, Israel Katz, said this week that 4,000 Palestinians who invaded Israel on Oct. 7 have been killed in the three years since, while about 2,000 of them remain alive. He said it’s the military’s “duty” to “eliminate them all.”
Israel’s war in Gaza has killed more than 70,000 in total, a tally that does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. About 20,000 children have been killed. Much of Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed, and it will take years for reconstruction. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as three Hamas leaders who helped conduct the Oct. 7 attack but who’ve since been killed in the war.
This anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack is notable for multiple reasons. It’s the first anniversary since Hamas released all of its hostages, which occurred later in October 2025, and Israel is about to go to the polls for the first time since the attack itself.

Netanyahu’s political future hangs in the balance when people go to the polls later this month. He has faced criticism for failing to prevent the attack, the brutal response, and the amount of destruction that wars have caused not just in Gaza but also in Lebanon, where Israel has fought against Hezbollah.
Since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack, Israel has carried out military operations in Syria, Iran, and Yemen in addition to Gaza and Lebanon to combat Iran and its group of proxy forces.
